This castle nut is designed as a locking type nut and is often used in conjunction with a cotter pin for locking bolts into place to prevent loosening and loss. The slots accommodate the cotter pin when used with a drilled shank fastener. The castle and slotted styles are interchangeable dependant on the desired design.
