Description
Cool shady spots need ferns. Elegant, tropical and woodsy all at the same time, they are a must for any shade garden. Holly fern, also commonly called Japanese holly fern, is so named because the leathery, arching dark-green fronds of this fern resemble holly branches. It's at home in a lovely way in woodland gardens and shady areas of beds or borders. Use as an understory plant for a tree-filled space. Appealing open vase shape also wins eye-candy points in a container on the patio or brought inside for houseplant life. Companion plants include hostas and other large-leaved perennials. The serrated foliage of holly fern contrasts nicely with softer-textured plants. Resistant to deer, heavy shade and salt. Grows to 24 in. H and 12 in. to 18 in. W. Appreciates regular watering and rich, well-drained soil. Provide filtered light. Hardy to Zone 7/0°F.
