8.3.6.3 S.M.A.R.T Attributes
The following table describes som e com m on S.M.A.R.T. at tribut es. I f a higher or lower raw at tribut e
value is better, it is indicat ed in t he BETTER colum n. Since S.M.A.R.T. at t ribut es and their
definit ions vary by m anufact urer, refer to t he hard drive m anufacturer for details about t he
attribut es your hard drive support s.
Updated This indicat es w hen the hard drive updat es t he value for this at tribute.
• Alw a ys m eans t he hard drive updates t his att ribut e during norm al operat ion and
during offline act iv ities.
• Offline m eans t he hard drive only updates t his att ribut e when no one is accessing t he
hard drive.
When Failed This colum n indicat es when ( if ever) t he att ribut e failed. An att ribut e has failed if t he
norm alized value is less than or equal to the t hreshold.
• - : This displays if t he att ribute is not failing now and has never failed in the past.
• FAI LI NG_ N OW : This displays if t he at tribut e’s current norm alized value is less t han or
equal t o t he t hr eshold.
• I n_ t he _ past : This displays if t he at tribute’s current norm alized value is great er t han
the t hreshold but t he worst recorded value is less than or equal to t he t hreshold.
Raw Dat a This is the at tr ibut e’s unprocessed raw data. These values show exact am ounts of t ime or
num bers of at tem pt s or errors. The m eaning t o t he raw values is specific t o t he hard drive
m anufacturer. Table 42 on page 156 has some inform ation about whet her a higher or lower
individual raw S.M.A.R.T. at tribut e value is bet ter.

01 Read Error Rat e Low Shows t he rate of hardware read errors. I f t his is not zer o, there is a
problem with t he disk surface or the read/ writ e heads.
02 Throughput
Perform ance
High This is the hard drive’s general (overall) t hroughput perform ance. A
decreasing value indicat es a pr oblem .
03 Spin- Up Tim e Low This is the average num ber of m illiseconds t he hard drive took for spindle
spin up ( from zero RPM t o fully operational).
04 Start / Stop Count The t otal num ber of spindle start and stop cycles.
05 Reallocat ed
Sectors Count
Low Total num ber of reallocat ed sectors on the hard drive. When t he hard
drive det ects a read/ writ e/ verification error, it m arks the sector as
“ reallocat ed” and t ransfers the data t o a specially r eserved (spare) area.
The process is also k nown as rem apping with “ r eallocat ed” sectors know n
as rem aps. The m ore sectors t he hard drive has t o reallocat e, the slower
read and write speeds becom e.
06 Read Channel
Margin
This is t he m argin of a channel when it reads dat a.
07 Seek Error Rate Low This is the rate of the m agnetic heads’ seek errors. A failure in the
m echanical positioning system , such as servo dam age or a t herm al
widening of the disk, result s in seek errors. An increasing num ber of seek
err ors indicat e the condition of t he disk surface and t he m echanical
subsystem are worsening.
08 Seek Tim e
Perform ance
High This is an average perform ance indicat or for the seek operations of t he
m agnetic heads. Mechanical subsystem problems cause this value t o
decrease.
