USING YOUR HUMMINGBIRD RING
To get hummingbirds used to your ring, first use the trainer (included with the Starter Kit
or available for separate purchase) or balance the ring in a shot glass or small flowerpot.
Hummingbirds are naturally curious and will investigate the brightly colored ring and quickly
discover its sweet nectar. If you have other nectar feeders, position the ring near them to attract
attention, and consider removing extra feeders after a day or two to encourage hummingbirds
to try the ring.
To keep insects away, wipe the ring off after refilling to be sure there is no exposed nectar
to attract ants or bees. Use a shallow dish such as a pie plate or plant saucer filled with
water and place the trainer, shot glass, or pot in the middle of the water to prevent ants from
approaching. Do not, however, use insecticides, oil-based, or petroleum products near the
feeder to discourage insects, as these products can hurt hummingbirds.
Ideally, first position the ring near where you hope to hand-feed hummingbirds, such as on
a patio table or deck railing near a seating area. Sit quietly nearby and watch the birds, but
stay out of reach until hummingbirds easily visit the ring. Gradually move your seat closer, but
avoid sudden movements or noise that may scare the birds. Wearing red, pink, or bright floral
patterns may help make you even more interesting to hungry hummingbirds so they will be
willing to approach more closely.
When you are ready to wear the Hummingbird Ring, brace your hand and arm to avoid
weariness or shaking. Stay as still and quiet as possible, and the birds will soon come right to
the ring for a sip. Hummingbirds may hover while feeding, or could land on the petals to rest
as they drink.
Above all, be patient. Hummingbirds are curious and bold, but they may still be hesitant to
come close right away. In time, however, the birds will get used to your presence and won’t be
able to resist.
CLIP AND TRAINER USE
The trainer holds up to three Hummingbird Rings at once and comes with a suction cup
to attach to a window for close, fun views of hummingbirds. The trainer is also sized to fit
inside a coffee mug, wine glass, small flowerpot, pint glass, or similar container and can be
positioned anywhere you hope to feed hummingbirds. Using the trainer can get hummingbirds
accustomed to feeding from the rings before you’re ready to bring the birds to your hand.
