DRYGARD
WATERPROOFING PAINT

DESCRIPTION AND USES
Zinsser
®
Drygard Waterproofing Paint is a low odor, water-
based paint designed to form a waterproof barrier on interior or
exterior, concrete block (not lightweight block) and cast-in-place
concrete. Drygard can be used to stop water pressures up to 10
PSI from entering or exiting a concrete surface. It is a good
option for waterproofing basements, cellars or other areas that
may become damp or wet. It is not recommended for use in
swimming pools or use in contact with potable water.

PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and sound. New concrete must cure
for at least 7 days prior to coating. Surfaces must be free of dirt,
efflorescence, mold, algae, sandy mortar or any material that
could compromise the coating adhesion. To test for the presence
of form sealers or release agents, splash water onto the surface.
If the surface turns dark, Drygard can be applied. If the water
beads up or does not turn dark, the surface must be chemically or
mechanically cleaned and retest before proceeding. Remove
efflorescence with WaterTite
®
Etch or equivalent product. Rinse
the surface thoroughly. Read the manufacturer’s directions when
using etch. Wear chemical splash goggles and a NIOSH
approved respirator and gloves while handling etching solutions.
Cast concrete, concrete block and mortar joints must be hard and
firm-not loose, sandy or soft. Scrape the surface with a flat
screwdriver to test for soundness. If soft or sandy, contact a
professional contractor before proceeding. Use mechanical
means (hand or power tools) to open holes (bug-holes) caused
by air bubbles in cast-in-place concrete to allow coating to fully
penetrate. Replace missing mortar, fill non-dynamic cracks and
bug-holes deeper than ⅛” with WaterTite
®
Hydraulic Cement or
equivalent product. Fill dynamic cracks and expansion joints with
WaterTite
®
Polyurethane Sealant. Drygard can be applied over
previously painted surfaces. However, waterproofing ability is
dependent upon the integrity and moisture resistance of the
previous coating.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release
lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN
CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE,
ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO
AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-Approved respirator to control
lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet
mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family
by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-
LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.)
APPLICATION
Stir or mechanically mix thoroughly before and during
application. DO NOT THIN. Apply only when air, material, and
surface temperatures are between 50-90ºF (10-32ºC) and the
relative humidity is or less than 85%. Apply two coats of
Drygard to form a continuous, pin-hole free coating. A third
coat may be necessary depending on the porosity of the
block. Apply using a high quality synthetic bristle brush or ¾”
nap roller. If rolled, back brush to first coat to work the
coating into the concrete pores. It is more important to work
the first coat into the surface than for it to hide the substrate.
Drygard can be applied with an airless sprayer (tip size 515 or
517). After spraying, back roll to ensure uniform coverage.
COLOR/TINTING
Drygard produces a smooth, flat finish that can be tinted with
up to 2 ounces of universal colorant. Tinting may affect the
hydrostatic water pressure resistance. Drygard can be
topcoated with latex, oil-base or epoxy coatings.
DRY & RECOAT
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative
humidity. Lower temperatures and higher humidity will
increase dry time. Drygard will dry to the touch in 2 hours.
Allow the first coat to dry a minimum of 2 hours before
applying the second coat. Apply the second coat only after
the first coat has completely dried. After the second coat has
dried, inspect the surface for pinholes. Reapply additional
paint to those areas as necessary. Full cure will be reached in
7 days (slightly longer if tinted). Protect from rain for 8 hours
after application.
CLEAN-UP
Clean hands and tools with soapy water. Drips and runs
should be removed immediately. Once dry, drips and runs
can be removed by sanding.
LIMITATIONS
Drygard is not an elastomeric and will not expand and
contract with movement in the substrate. It will not provide
protection against moisture, penetration through cracks in
mortar, expansion joints or junctures between dissimilar
materials. Drygard will not penetrate and fill inaccessible
surfaces, un-opened bug-holes or raked mortar joints. Do not
use on glazed or non-porous surfaces.
