6. OPERATING SYSTEM

operation.Uponring,thepressuredevelopedbycombustiongasinthechamberrecoils
theslideandbarrelassemblytogether.Afterashortdistance,alinkallowsthebarrelto
pivot,releasingtheslide,lettingitrecoilwhilethebarrelstopsagainsttheframe.During
thisrearwardmovement,theslideextractsandejectstheredcartridgecase,cocksthe
hammerandcompressestherecoilspring.Undertheforceoftherecoilspring,theslide
thenmovesforward,feedingthenextcartridgefromthemagazineintothechamber
andcausingthebarrel-slidetolock.Theslidestaysopenafterthelastcartridgeinthe
magazinehasbeenredandejected.
