6. OPERATING SYSTEM

usingafallingblocklockingsystem.Uponring,thepressuredevelopedbycombustion
gasinthechamberrecoilstheslideandbarrelassemblytogether.Afterashortdistance,
thelockingblockfallsandreleasestheslide,lettingitrecoilwhilethebarrelstops
againsttheframe.Duringthisrearwardmovement,theslideextractsandejectsthered
cartridgecase,cocksthehammerandcompressestherecoilspring.Undertheforce
oftherecoilspring,theslidethenmovesforward,feedingthenextcartridgefromthe
magazineintothechamberandcausingthebarrel-slidetolock.Theslidestaysopen
afterthelastcartridgeinthemagazinehasbeenredandejected.
Intherecoil operating system,theslidenevertrulylocks,butitsmassholdsitin
placewhilering.Theenergyoftheroundforcestheslidetotherear.Onceitisback,it
operatesthesameasabove.
