K.I.S.S.™ (Keep It Simple Serial!™)
Ze k to r ’s excl u s i ve K .I . S . S .™ (Keep I t Simple S erial™) p rotocol was de -
signed by engineers who h ave been controlling RS - 232 devices for
most of their c a reers a n d understand th e p i tfalls of a bad l y d esigned
pro t o col.
A few features of the K.I.S.S.™ protocol are:
A simple and l o g i c a l ly consistent command stru c ture.
Fu l ly bi- directional o p erations and can op e rated in b o th
a Master Slave mode (onl y resp o n d s when spoken to) , o r
in an Asynchronous mode ( s tate changes are sent as t h e y
occur).
All commands and respon s e s can optional l y use a checksu m
or a CRC-8 ch e c k code to insure re l iable communication s.
A command will a l ways generate a response! There are no
“timeout ” states as p a r t of the protocol. A timeout wil l a l-
ways i n d i cate some typ e o f physi c a l connecti o n error (loose
cable, extreme noi s e, etc.).
Co m m ands and responses h ave been de s i g n e d fo r s i mple
parsing in any langua g e.
Easy to test using a ter m inal, or terminal em u l a t i o n soft-
ware. (H yper term, Se c u reCR T, etc. )
A few features of the HDVI5 command set are:
A full feature d command set that g o e s far beyond simple
fro n t panel control operations! Allows full control over all
fe at u res of t h e HDVI5.
Fu l l notification o f s tate changes.
Th e abilit y to disable the f ront pa n e l, an d s till have fro nt
panel button presses se nt to t h e serial por t .
Th e abilit y to re a d all IR codes s e nt to t h e HDVI5 by any re -
mote, e ven t h o s e not used by the H D V I5. Use the HDVI 5 to
add IR control to any pro j ect!

Th e RS-232 o n t he HDVI5 is t h e same format as a PC-m o d e m , and
uses the same t ype cabl e a s a serial m o d e m wo uld, which is a sta n -
dard straight through cable. Do n o t u se a cable th at i s marked as a
“Null Mod e m” c a ble.
Th e HDVI5 can a l s o be used with a ny USB to R S -232 conve r s i o n
cable, these are all t y p ically straight through c a b l es.
Th e RS-232 p o r t is a female type D E -9 connec tor ( s o metimes mista k-
enly refe r re d to as a DB-9 con n e c tor) with t h e fo l l o w i n g pinout:
