1.4.1 Switch is Not Failing Over
Switch is not failing over (Hot Standby) as appropriate. Table 1.11 provides suggestions to troubleshoot this
issue. Please verify the latest version of JRE is installed on your system.
1.4.2 Switch is Failing Over Too Frequently
Switch failing over too frequently (flapping). Table 1.12 provides suggestions to troubleshoot this issue.

Possible Issues Suggestions to Correct
Primary and Standby
switches are not both
enabled
Verify that the Primary and Secondary switches are Standby enabled and have the
correct MAC address configured for the correct Primary/Secondary switch.
Primary and Standby
switches have mismatched
software versions
Mismatch configurations are not allowed. Verify that the Primary and Secondary
switches have the same software versions running.
Use the show system command at the WS5000> prompt.
Primary and Standby
switches cannot
communicate with each
other
Verify that the Primary and Secondary switch are configured properly and attempt to
ping each switch (using the ping command) from each switch.
Other problems, as listed in
switch logs
Review the local logs on the Standby switch.
MAC address configuration
issues
Review the Syslog. The correct MAC address should be seen when checking the Syslog
heartbeat messages. Use the show syslog command.
Conflicting addressing on
same network
If more than one Primary switch exists on the same network, then use MAC addresses
to configure.
Outdated version of JRE Ensure you are using JRE version 1.4.2-06 or above.

Possible Issues Suggestions to Correct
Hold time setting is too low Adjust the hold time on both the Primary and the Standby from Service Mode CLI, as
follows:
• Use the disable command:
SM-WS5000.(Cfg).StandBy> disable
• Adjust the holdtime. For example:
SM-WS5000.(Cfg).StandBy>set holdtime 15
•Use the enable command. For example:
SM-WS5000.(Cfg).StandBy> enable
One of the switches is
crashing
Check the CPU usage. For example:
SM-WS5000>show sysstat
System status shows
issues
Verify that the switch is not crashing. Check system status. For example:
SM-WS5000>show sysstat
