Another method of testing print darkness, with a test label that contains a large amount of
printing, is performed with the Pause Key Self Test. First, you must determine how you
want to proceed with the adjustments.
1. You can run the Pause Key Self Test without knowing your current darkness setting.
You can run the test, examine the labels, and then perform the procedure “Adjusting
the Printer Darkness” on page 2-26 using your best guess as to how far to increase
or decrease the setting to the optimal setting.
2. You can set the darkness to the factory default value or anything you wish, then run
the Pause Key Self Test, and then perform the procedure “Adjusting the Printer
Darkness” on page 2-26.
To Set Darkness Setting Manually
1. Press MODE. The pause and darken LEDs come on.
2. Press and release CANCEL (W) to decrease the setting, each time waiting for the
darken LED to flash once before pressing again. Continue to press CANCEL (W)
until the LED does not flash. This means you are at setting “0.”
3. Press and release FEED (V) to increase the setting, each time waiting for the LED
to flash once before pressing again. Continue to press FEED (V) until you count up
to 10 (factory default) or to your desired setting.
4. Press MODE three times. The mode LEDs will flash to indicate that the settings
have been saved permanently to memory.
5. Press PAUSE to resume printing. You are now ready to start the Pause Key Self
Test.
To Start the Pause Key Self Test
Press and hold PAUSE while turning the printer On (l). This self test consists of four
individual test features:
• The initial self test prints 15 labels at 2 in. (50.8 mm) per second (ips) (speed A),
then automatically pauses the printer. Each time PAUSE is pressed, an additional
15 labels print, up to a maximum of 9999 labels.
• While the printer is paused, pressing CANCEL once alters the self test. Now each
time PAUSE is pressed,15 labels print at 6 (152.4 mm) ips (speed D) up to a
maximum of 9999 labels.
• While the printer is paused, pressing CANCEL a second time alters the self test
again. Now each time PAUSE is pressed, 50 labels print at 2 (50.8 mm) ips, up to
a maximum of 9999 labels.
• While the printer is paused, pressing CANCEL a third time alters the self test
again. Now each time PAUSE is pressed, 50 labels print at 6 (152.4) ips up to a
maximum of 9999 labels.
• To conserve labels, check the sample labels in tests 1 or 2 of the Pause Key Self
Test. If you are not satisfied with the print darkness quality, proceed to “Adjusting
the Printer Darkness” on page 2-26 and adjust accordingly.
Run test 1 or 2 of the Pause Key Self Test and repeat the procedures if the desired print
darkness is still not achieved.
