PUBLIC ADDRESS | SOUND REINFORCEMENT – EDUCATION SUPPLEMENT
SPEAKERS Choosing a speaker starts with
understanding how they are to be used. Will
they be portable or permanently mounted?
What size room will they be used in and how
many people will be in the audience? Will the
speakers be used for sound reinforcement or
playback? What sort of sound will be sent to them?
Music? Speech? Foreground? Background? Are there aesthetic or practi-
cal limits (i.e. size or weight)? How loud must the system be? How much
power is available to drive them with? What is your budget? Knowing all of
this will help you find the right speaker for you, and the most cost effective.
Full Compass carries a wide variety of speakers for any application. Call for
advice on your next project.
Types of Speakers
Background Speakers are primarily for music playback at a low volume
level and for occasional voice announcements. They are usually built into
the ceiling or flush mounted to walls in order to be as inconspicuous as
possible.
Foreground Speakers are larger and designed to be a primary focus of
the audience’s attention.
Reinforcement Speakers are used to amplify the sound from live
microphones, which are usually in the same room and prone to feedback.
The speakers must be positioned that minimizes direct radiation to the
microphones and room reflections, both of which can cause feedback and
reduce clarity.
Speaker Features
Pattern – This describes the shape of the sound radiating from the front
of the speaker. A wide room may require a wide pattern, a long narrow
room may require a narrow pattern speaker, with a long “throw” in order to
project sound to the back of the room. Patterns for high frequencies are
generally quoted with horizontal and vertical angle of coverage.
Range – This describes the frequency response of the speaker. A
speaker used primarily for voice reinforcement need not reproduce deep
bass frequencies, thus saving on size and cost. And a musical group with
no bass instruments has no need for overly large speakers either. Full
range speakers reproduce the entire audio spectrum but there are also
partial range speakers. For example, smaller speakers can be designed
for use with separate LF (low frequency) bass cabinets, or subwoofers.
Even within a single speaker cabinet, there are generally multiple drivers
involved in a frequency dividing network (crossover network) to route the
HF (high frequency) component to the tweeters, and the LF component to
the woofer. A typical “2-way” speaker might consist of a 12" LF woofer and
a HF horn, which would handle the mid and high frequencies over a “cross-
over frequency” (somewhere near 1000Hz which is the point at which the
signal splits between the 2 drivers.) Some systems feed each driver from
a separate amplifier, with the crossover network ahead of the amplifiers.
This method is referred to as bi-amping (2-way) or tri-amping (3-way).
Power – This describes the speaker’s ability to work safely with specified
amounts of power from an amplifier over a period of time. The more effi-
cient a speaker is, the less power it needs to operate. Generally it is better
to use amplifiers with significantly higher output ratings than the speaker
requires, running them well under maximum output. It is very important to
avoid sending highly distorted, overdriven audio peaks to speakers. Clipped
audio signals not only sound bad, they are frequently the cause of voice coil
failure in speakers. Sometime power amplifiers are integrated into the
speaker cabinet and are known as “active” or “powered” speakers. In this
case, the amplifiers can be tuned and optimized for that specific speaker
driver and cabinet.
Impedance – This is the rating (in ohms) of how a speaker loads an ampli-
fier. The lower the ohms, the greater the load. When connecting multiple
speakers to a single amplifier channel the total load must not pass below
the amplifier’s capability to drive a low impedance load. Most amplifiers
will drive either an 8-ohm or a 4-ohm load, and some will drive a 2-ohm
load. Two 8-ohm speakers in parallel (on one amplifier channel) result
in a 4-ohm load. Four 8ohm speakers in parallel are a 2-ohm load on the
amplifier. When connecting multiple units in parallel, only the same model
speakers can be used.
70 Volt Distribution – When a single amplifier will be required to feed
a large number of speakers, as is common in background music or paging
systems, a high impedance distribution system is preferred. The ampli-
fier usually has an impedance step-up transformer at its output and each
speaker uses a transformer that can tap into different amounts of power
from the distribution system. Having a high impedance distribution line
allows smaller gauge wire to be used and many speakers to be connected
to a single amplifier.
Construction – Most portable speakers are either made of plywood, or
molded plastic for durability and less weight. Portable speakers often have
corner bumpers and handle. Some have carpeted finishes and most have
a protective grille over the speaker elements. Large, permanent speakers
can be very heavy with cabinets of birch or MDF composite wood that is
less prone to rattle or buzz at high volume. Internal bracing also helps to
minimize flexing. Many permanent mount speakers are designed to mount
flush with a wall/ceiling surface and have special metal back-boxes and
brackets to make mounting quick and easy in drop ceilings.
Environment – Most speakers are designed for indoor use only. Outdoor
applications require special models with weatherproof enclosures and use
materials and terminations that will tolerate harsh environments.
Connectors – Portable speakers are designed for rapid set-up and
teardown. They usually have 2 conductor 1/4" female connectors or a more
rugged locking Speakon connector that have 2, 4 or 8 conductors (useful for
biamping). Permanent speakers usually have screw terminal connections
for reliable long-term connection. Some ceiling speakers have solder or
press on terminals.
Mounting – It is best when speakers are placed high enough to be in the
line of sight of all of the audience. Portable speakers may be placed on a
scaffold, on a shelf or mounted on a stand. Many portable speakers have
bottom sockets for stand mounting while others may be adapted for that
purpose. Permanent speakers must have secure mounts for the safety
of the audience and in some cases have a metal frame on the inside to
connect to eyebolts or other fasteners. A 10-to-1 ratio of rigging weight
capacity to speaker weight is recommended for all permanent mounting
systems. It is a good practice to support wood cabinets from the bottom to
avoid stress on glued joints. If you are unsure how to install a permanent
speaker, please seek professional help for the installation.
