3. Network & Redundancy concept
Based on the system specication list in the previous
chapter the following Yamaha System Solutions design
concept is proposed.
Network
The Yamaha System Solutions design concept uses
CobraNet™ audiodevices.All devices areconnected to
a Gigabit Ethernet network using a star topology. The
network uses managed switches supporting VLAN and
RapidSpanningTreeProtocols.
VLAN
ThenetworkisdividedintwoVLANs:oneforCobraNet™
andoneforcontrol.Ifasystemrequirestheuseofmany
multicastbundles,additionalVLANscanbeincluded.
Switches
A high capacity and a low capacity switch supporting
Gigabitconnectivityareusedtobuildthenetwork.
Bothswitchessupport IEEE802.1qVLAN,IEEE802.1w
rapid spanning tree, IEEE802.3ad link aggregation and
QoSfunctionality.
Star locations
AhighcapacityswitchincludingatleastfourGBICports
forGigabitberconnectivityisusedforthestarlocation.
Such a high capacity switch is typically not available
withoutcoolingfans,sothislocationshouldbeplannedin
aplacewhereacousticnoiseisnotaproblemsuchasthe
amplierrack.
End locations
Alowcapacityswitchincludingatleasteight100MbRJ45
ports,oneGigabitRJ45portandoneGBICportforGigabit
berconnectivityisusedforallotherlocationsattheends
ofthestarnetwork.Theeight100Mbportsaredividedin
sixportscarryingtheCobraNet™VLAN,andtwoports
carryingthecontrolVLAN.Theswitchshouldnothave
coolingfanssoitcanbeusedinnoise-freeconditionson
stageorattheFOHpositionintheaudience.
Cabling
Alllongdistancecablingfromthestartothefourlocations
carrying Gigabit network information is specied with
50 µmmultimode ber,connectedtotheswitches using
appropriateGBICber modules. Fordistancesunder50
metersCAT5Ecablingcanbeusedinstead.
All furtherconnections in the system use CAT5cabling
carrying100Mbnetworkinformation.
Redundancy
All locations use double switches, labelled primary and
secondary, with a Gigabit link between them. The two
switchesareconnectedtothestarlocationbytwocables,
preferably laid out over differentphysical pathsthrough
the venue. All CobraNet™ devices’ primary links are
connectedtotheprimaryswitch,andthesecondarylinks
tothe secondary switch.In the starlocation’s secondary
switchtheRapidSpanningTreeProtocolisactive.
