PDF (Portable Document File) are a standard in today’s industry. The same variations that can slow your
production for a native file apply to PDFs as well. It is always best to optimize the PDF by flattening any
layers. Always read the full documentation and understand how PDFs affect color paths with the print
engine. Adobe has several literatures available on PDF creation such as How to Create the Perfect PDF,
and Designer's Guide to Transparency for Print Output. These documents are downloadable from
Adobe’s web site at http://www.adobe.com/studio/print/.

Print Server has the following licensable features. These features may come
standard or have an associated price with it depending on your geographical region.

• Diagnostics with Productivity Tools
• NetWare Gateway
• PCL Decomposer
• PostScript Decomposer
• TIFF Decomposer
• Time and Materials Diagnostics
• VIPP*
• PPML
• IPDS*
The Service Technician will activate your selections by supplying the license string, expiration date, and
print engine serial number.
* The VIPP and IPDS features have a fee associated with the licenses.
19.8. File Formats
The following file formats are supported:
• PostScript level 1, 2, or 3 per the PostScript language Reference Manual
Supplement v3017
• Adobe Portable Document Format version up to 1.8 (Acrobat 9). Adobe job ticketing is not supported.
Unique Acrobat 8 features that are not print commands are not supported
• PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 and PDF/X-4 (using Native PDF Interpreter)
• Optimized PostScript
• EPS
• TIFF v6.0, native and multi-page. TIFF-IT is not supported
• PCL5c, PCL5e, and PCL6XL class 2.1 (HP LaserJet 4500 emulation). PCL jobs should be tested prior to
making system productivity and capability commitments. PCL does not support the full range of
FreeFlow
®
Print Server features, in particular, page exception programming, stock management, and
finishing
• ASCII (ANSI X3.4-1986)
• Jobs that have been RIPped (Fast Reprint Format – FRF)
• Intelligent Print Data Stream (IPDS), license required
• Xerox Variable-data Intelligent PostScript Printware (VIPP); license required
