simplex printing Printing on one side of the page. See also duplex printing.
spooling Process of releasing data from main memory and storing it
temporarily until a peripheral device is ready to accept it, for
example storing text before sending it to a printer.
spot Unit of measurement representing a fraction of an inch, for
example, 300 spots per inch (spi). May also be referred to as a
picture element (pixel) or dot.
stock User-defined name in the JSL that specifies a certain type of
paper for printing a job. See also cluster.
stockset Collection of stocks to be used on a print job. See also stock;
cluster.
symbol A complete bar code message including quiet zones, a start
character, data characters, check digit (if any), and stop character.
Represents a complete, scannable entity.
system generation Process whereby the system is made ready to operate. Typically
involves selecting the operative parameters and activating the
relevant software.
TEM terminal emulation mode. The processing method of the PC UI
which features a character display and the operator's use of the
keyboard. The mouse, windows, and icons are inactive in this
mode. The PC UI operates in either the TEM mode or in the
object mode. See also object mode.
TOF top of form
two-up Application that prints two logical pages on one side of a
physical page.
type size See point size.
typeface 1. All type of a single design. 2. Set of characters with design
features that make them similar to one another.
UCS Universal Character Set. Printer feature that permits the use of a
variety of character arrays.
variable data Variable data is not a part of a form design. It varies from page
to page.
virtual page Page area selected by a forms designer for printing.
Waste Management A complete accounting of unsuccessfully delivered sheets such
as jam scrap or purged sheets. Waste Management is a
component of Enhanced Sheet Tracking.
