Getting Started Evaluating Coating Condition
Stripping away an existing solid or semi-solid acrylic stain is
recommended if the following condition applies:
The current stain is in a weathered state, and will be
re-
coated with a different, less opaque coating type (semi-
transparent stain, toner, clear water sealer, etc).
In this case, the existing opaque stain should be stripped to
thoroughly remove visible pigment and residual water
repellency, and to create a bare, sound surface for maximum
adhesion and durability of the new stain top-coat.
Select and use Wolman DeckStrip-ASR if the above
condition applies. For further guidance, read the following
WOOD CONDITION criteria for preparing stained surfaces:
Wood Condition:
Previously Stained, Weathered Wood
1) For 100% Acrylic, Acrylic/Alkyd or Water-Base/Latex
solid or semi-solid stains in a weathered state, use
Wolman DeckStrip-ASR Acrylic Stain
Remover
according to label instructions to remove old coating
before re-coating with the same stain or different
coating type.
2) For Acrylic, Water-Base stains in a sound condition,
thoroughly clean with Wolman DeckBrite powder
concentrate or Deck & Fence Brightener liquid
concentrate before re-coating with the same solid or
semi-solid stain type. Either cleaning product will remove
chalky paint residue, embedded dirt, mildew and other
contaminants, residual coating material and water
repellency. According to label guidelines, select the
appropriate cleaning product for your wood type, use
according to directions and rinse with a garden hose or
pressure washer set at a low setting. When dry, scrape off
and sand any remaining loose flaking or peeling coating.
Note: To strip traditional oil or water-base deck stains
(semi-transparents, toners, tinted wood protectors or water
repellent sealers, etc.) select Wolman DeckStrip Stain &
Finish Remover and use according to label directions.
Recommended Application Method
Homeowner/DIYer:
On Horizontal Surfaces: A synthetic bristle brush or mop
is recommended.
On Vertical Surfaces: A synthetic bristle brush or deep-
nap roller is recommended. When applying, work from the
bottom to the top of the structure.
A pump sprayer (with no aluminum parts) may also be
employed, but Safe Handling directions detailed on other side
must be followed to avoid exposure to over-spray.
