To see the Mobile Devices page, select one of these views from the Page Views drop-down
list in Installation Expert: All, Palm Application, Pocket PC Application, Smartphone
Application.
When you add support on the Mobile Devices page, the installation that you create is an
.MSI-based installation, which can only be installed on a desktop computer. However,
the .MSI-based installation installs files that support the mobile device software. Thus
any mobile device installation is a two-part process: the .MSI-based installation is
installed onto the desktop computer, and then the appropriate device installation is
installed.
The advantage of using an .MSI-based installation that also installs to mobile devices is
that the mobile device installation can be part of a larger installation that installs
software to the desktop computer. This lets you install your main application to a
desktop computer and simultaneously install support for any mobile device—Pocket PC,
Smartphone, Palm—that the user has. The ability to install to all platforms at once,
including Windows, simplifies the installation process for you and the end user.
In addition, if the installation supports the Pocket PC 2002 platform, you can
automatically install the .NET Compact Framework, a version of .NET designed for
mobile devices. If you don’t have the .NET Compact Framework runtime, and you
include it, the Download Redistributables wizard guides you through downloading it from
our Web site.
