SECTION E. INTERFACE TO INSERTING EQUIPMENT
The 420T is designed to be run on-line with the inserter. It can be docked to
any of the insert stations, however, station #1 is preferable. Before the 420T
may be mated up to the Inserter there are a few pieces on the Inserter which
need to be removed or repositioned. The parts to be removed are the
hopper side and rear plates, T-plate, and insert cushion cup. The singulator
finger and cushion cup mount must be repositioned. A demand switch must
be added to the Inserter.
These changes may be done once and left that way so the 420T may be
used again without going through them each time. If this is done however,
this station will not be usable in normal operation.
E.1 ENCODER INSTALLATION
There are two optional kits, depending on the inserter, that are available. Kit
numbers 389-31589-401 & 389-31589-402 both contain an encoder with
pulleys, a timing belt, and miscellaneous hardware for mounting the encoder
near the main drive shaft of the inserter.

The following are steps to describe the mechanical setup of a GBR438
Inserter Encoder on a Bowe Bell & Howell Gripper Arm type machine.
Inserter Home Position Setup
Jog the Inserter:
With the gripper moving into the pocket, position and stop the gripper arm
fully into the pocket.
This is the zero, ‘0’, degree position, the Inserter Home position.
Place the GBR438 at the “Inserter Setup Screen 0”
This screen shows:
Current Degree Display, 0 to 350 to 0.
Change in Home Display, 0 to 1 to 0.
NOTE: THIS DISPLAY CHANGES AS THE HOME SIGNAL
PASSES.
‘1’ IS NOT HOME - ‘0’ IS NOT HOME
THE CHANGE IN VALUE IS AN INDICATION OF HOME POSITION.
Loosen the belt at the Inserter Encoder so the Encoder can be rotated
without turning the belt connected to the Inserter shaft.
Rotate the Encoder pulley slowly until the Inserter Setup Screen 0”,
Home Displaychanges either from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0.
This indicates that you are rotating through the encoders Home signal.
Rotate the Encoder slightly back and forth to confirm that the “Home
changes from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0.
Re-tighten the belt to the Encoder.
Slowly cycle the Inserter through its cycles.
Note the Degree Display cycling 0 to 350 to 0.
Jog the Inserter:
With the gripper moving into the pocket, position and stop the gripper arm
fully into the pocket.
