2.22 Eth er net Con troller
The 82559 is part of In tel’s sec ond gen era tion fam ily of fully in te grated 10BASE-T/100BASE- TX
LAN so lu tions. The 82559 con sists of both the Me dia Ac cess Con trol ler (MAC) and the physi cal layer
(PHY) com bined into a sin gle com po nent so lu tion.
The 82559 is a 32- bit PCI con trol ler that fea tures en hanced scatter- gather bus mas ter ing ca pa bili -
ties which en ables it to per form high- speed data trans fers over the PCI bus. The 82559 bus mas ter ca pa -
bili ties en able the com po nent to pro cess high-level com mands and per form mul ti ple op era t ions off-
loading com mu ni ca tion tasks from the sys tem CPU. Two large trans mit and re ceive FI FOs of 3 Kbytes
each help pre vent data un derruns and over runs, al low ing the 82559 to trans mit data with mini mum in -
ter frame spac ing (IFS).
The 82559 can op er ate in ei ther full du plex or half du plex mode. In full du plex mode the 82559 ad -
heres to the IEEE 802.3x Flow Con trol speci fi ca tion. Half du plex per form ance is en hanced by a pro -
prie tary col li sion re duc tion mecha nism.
The 82559 in cludes a sim ple PHY in ter face to the wire trans former at rates of 10BASE-T and
100BASE- TX, and Auto- Negotiation ca pa bil ity for speed, du plex, and flow con trol. The 82559 a lso in -
cludes an in ter face to a se rial (4- pin) EE PROM. The EE PROM pro vides power- on ini tiali za t ion for
hard ware and soft ware con figu ra tion pa rame ters. The 82559 is also 100% PnP com pati ble and is con -
fig ured through this in ter face. Eth er net con nec tion to the EBC- BX is made through the con n ec tor at
J28.
There are Eth er net status LED’s at D6, D7, and D8. The color and func tion of each LED is listed be -
low :
D6 = Eth er net 100BASE- TX (Red)
D7 = Eth er net ac tiv ity LED (Green)
D8 = Eth er net link LED (Yel low)
