Figure 24-2: Specifying where to search for help.
When you’re connected to Office Online, you can identify the URL for the Help topic
and send it to someone else. To do so, right-click the current Help topic and choose
Properties. The Properties dialog box displays the URL of the Help topic. Select the
URL text with your mouse, and press Ctrl+C to copy it. The URL can be opened with
any Web browser.
It took me a long time to figure this one out: You can determine which buttons appear on
the toolbar in the Help window. Click the tiny icon on the right side of the toolbar and
select Add or Remove buttons. You see the list shown in Figure 24-3.
Context-sensitive help is spotty. For example, if an Excel dialog box is displayed, press-
ing F1 (or clicking the question mark icon on the dialog box title bar) displays the Help
window. In some cases, the Help information relates to what you’re doing (for example,
the Name Manager dialog box). In other cases, you’re presented with the opening screen
of the Excel Help system (for example, when the Sort dialog box is displayed). In the
latter case, you can use the Search box to find the information that should have been
displayed for you automatically.
You have no way to display the Office Help window if an Office application is not run-
ning. In previous versions of Office, you could double-click a *.CHM help file, and the
help file would be displayed. That’s no longer possible in Office 2007 because of the new
Help system technology that’s used.
