Poor Quality S-Video Output on Some TVs
NVIDIAdriversdifferentiateanS‐videoTVfromacompositeTVbysearchingfor75‐
Ohmloadsonthechrominanceandluminancelines.Ifthedriverdetectsonlyonesuch
load,itassumesthatithasacompositeTVanddrivesbothchromaandlumaontothat
line.Thisapproachallows
bothtypesofTVtodisplayincolor.
Unfortunately,someS‐videoTVsdonotapplythecorrectloadtobothlines,causingthe
drivertodetectanS‐videoTVasacomposite.Thedriver,inturn,sendsthelowerquality
signaltotheS‐videoTV.Toworkaround
thisproblem,usetheControlPaneltooverride
theAuto‐selectfeature.Thiscanbedonefollowingthesesteps:
1 IntheSettingstaboftheDisplayPropertiesControlPanel,clickAdvanced.
2 InthenViewtab,clickDeviceSettingsandclickSelectOutputDevice.
3 IntheDeviceSelectiontab,clicktheTVoption.
4 ChangetheVideooutputformattoS‐video.
AGP and PCI-E Programs May Hang With AMD K7 and K8
Processors
Issue
Microsoft®Windows®2000andWindowsXPsystemsusingAMDK7andK8
processorscanhangwhenanAGPorPCI‐Eprogramisused.
RootCause
ThereisaknownproblemwithMicrosoft®Windows®2000andWindowsXP
systemsusingAMDK7andK8CPUsthatresultsintheMicrosoftoperatingsystem
allocatingoverlapping4Mcachedpageswith4kwrite‐combinedpages.This
conditionresultsinundefinedbehavioranddatacorruption,andisexplicitly
disallowed
bytheAMDCPUmanual.
Thisproblemcanaffectanydevicedriverinthesystemthatallocateswrite‐combined
systemmemory,butisusuallymosteasilyreproducedwithgraphicsdriverssince
graphicsdriversgenerallymakeheavyuseofwrite‐combinedsystemmemoryfor
performancereasons.
Resolution
Microsofthasaknowledgebasearticleontheissue,thetextofwhichisunfortunately
quiteoutdated.WhilethearticleonlymentionsWindows2000,AGP,andK7,boththe
rootcauseandresolutionalsoapplytoWindows2000orWindowsXP,AGPorPCI‐E,
andAMDK7orK8.
