4.6 VLAN
AVirtualLAN(VLAN)isa“logical”groupingofnodesforthepurposeoflimitinga
broadcastdomaintospecificmembersofagroupwithoutphysicallygroupingthe
memberstogether.Thatmeans,VLANallowsyoutoisolatenetworktrafficso
thatonlymembersofVLANcouldreceivetrafficfromthesameVLANmembers.
Basically,creatingaVLANfromaswitchisthelogicalequivalentofphysically
reconnectingagroupofnetworkdevicestoanotherLayer2switch,without
actuallydisconnectingthesedevicesfromtheiroriginalswitches.
PMIIndustrialEthernetSwitchsupports802.1QVLAN.802.1QVLANisalso
knownasTag‐BasedVLAN.ThisTag‐BasedVLANallowsVLANtobecreated
acrossdifferentswitches.IEEE802.1Qtag‐basedVLANmakesuseofVLAN
controlinformationstoredinaVLANheaderattachedtoIEEE802.3packet
frames.ThistagcontainsaVLANIdentifier(VID)thatindicateswhichVLANa
framebelongsto.Sinceeachswitchonlyhastocheckaframe’stag,withoutthe
needtodissectthecontentsoftheframe,thisalsosavesalotofcomputing
resourceswithintheswitch.
