STARTER
MOTOR
3. Holding test. With a battery connected to the solenoid
terminal S
(+) and to the starter body, manually pull out
the pinion fully. The pinion must remain at that position
even when released from holding with your hand.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Disconnect the wire from the solenoid terminal M (-).
2. Loosen the two screws fastening the solenoid. Remove
the solenoid assembly.
3. Remove the two long through bolts and two screws
fastening the brush holder. Remove the rear bracket.
4. With the brushes pulled away from the armature,
remove the yoke and brush holder assembly. Then pull
the armature out.
5. Remove the cover, pry the snap ring out, and remove the
washer.
6.
Unscrew the bolts and remove the center bracket.
At
the
same time, the washers for the pinion shaft end play
adjustment will come off.

Return
test:
With a battery connected to the solenoid
terminal M (-) and to the starter body, manually pull out
the pinion fully. The pinion must return to its original
position when released from holding by hand.

7. Pull out the reduction gear lever and lever spring from the
front bracket.
8.
On the pinion side, pry the snap ring out, and pull out the
pinion and pinion shaft.
9.
At
each end
of
the armature, remove the ball bearing with
a bearing puller. It is impossible to replace the ball bear-
ing press-fitted in the front bracket.
If
that bearing has
worn off, replace the front bracket assembly.

INSPECT

COMPONENTS,
REPLACE
ANY
PARTS
THAT
APPEAR
BURNED
OR
ARE
CORRODED.
