Filling the Fresh Water System
A
coolant recovery tank kit is supplied with each Westerbeke diesel generator. The purpose
of
this recovery
tank is
to
allow
for
engine coolant expansion and contraction, during engine operation, without the loss of
coolant and without introducing air into the cooling system.
This coolant recovery tank should be installed at,
or
above, engine manifold level,
in
a location where it can
be easily monitored and where
coolant can be easily added if needed (see the figure below). A stainless
steel
mounting bracket is supplied with each kit along with a 30-inch length
of
clear plastic hose and clamps
to
connect the hose between the engine's manifold fitting
to
the hose spud on the base of the recovery tank.

PASSAGE
Coolant Recovery Tank, Recommended Installation
Coolant from the engine, when heated during the engine's operation, will expand, lift the spring-loaded
manifold
pressure cap, and enter the recovery tank via the hose connecting the recovery tank
to
the manifold.
When the engine is shut down and cools, a small check valve in the pressure cap is opened
by
the contrac-
tion
of
the engine's coolant, allowing some coolant in the recovery tank
to
be drawn back into the engine's
cooling system, free of air and without loss.
