1 1 Prerequisites for the Upgrade Cautions and Warnings Caution Read this entire document before taking a single action on the Central Station or System. Caution Mis-typing or skipping any of the instructions in this document may render your System inoperable. If the System is out of warranty and not covered by a Service Contract, any support from Welch Allyn to recover from mistakes made during this process will incur a per-incident fee.
2 Prerequisites for the Upgrade Note Welch Allyn Most Systems will meet all these requirements. If your system does not meet these requirements, you will be notified during the installation process. Other Requirements To minimize the impact of upgrading your System, please plan ahead. Make sure all of the following have occurred prior to beginning. • Arrange for 20 minutes of time for each individual System to not be monitoring patients. (This is more than enough time for a successful patch.
Installation Guide Prerequisites for the Upgrade 3 • Always upgrade HA CPUs in pairs, immediately before or after the Primary CPU. • The order in which systems are upgraded can be used to minimize these disruptions. Welch Allyn recommends installing the software upgrade and rebooting systems in the following order. • System acting as an SQL server 1. • HA Pairs of CPUs. • Other Primary systems. • Auto Open Secondary systems. • Patient List Review system.

5 2 Preparing the System Confirm system current version An important item that you should check before attempting to install the software update is to determine the System’s current version of software. Note 1. While the CDROM upgrade software will prevent the upgrade installation with system versions that are not compatible, this step may be helpful in planning activities prior to the upgrade. On the Central Station screen: a.
6 Preparing the System 7. Welch Allyn If the system version is not listed as compatible, contact Welch Allyn Technical Support to discuss your options. Notification Take whatever precaution is necessary to warn the hospital staff that the system to be updated will be down for 20 minutes. This time is approximate and may be less or more. The unique characteristics of each system make this impossible to predict with 100% accuracy. However, allocating 20 minutes of time is enough in most cases.
Installation Guide Preparing the System 7 2. At the password: prompt, enter the system root password and press the Enter key. If you are unsure what the root password is, contact Welch Allyn Technical Support at 1800-289-2501 Option1. Note Nothing displays on the screen while you type the root password. The system gives no indication that you have typed anything until after pressing Enter. You must type the root password in perfect sequence. Do not use the Backspace or Delete keys to make a correction.

9 3 Installing the Update Execute the upgrade commands If, at the completion of this chapter, you would like a copy of the log file printed, please follow the instructions in Appendix A. Similarly, if the procedures in this chapter fail, follow the instructions in Appendix A before calling Technical Support. To execute the upgrade commands: 1. Type ./upgrade.sh and press Return.

11 4 Completing the Installation Caution Do not proceed with this section if error messages were observed when the upgrade was run. The system may be rendered inoperable. Instead contact Welch Allyn Technical Support for additional assistance. Prior to rebooting Before rebooting the CPU, it is important to take note of the current system state. 1. Ask a clinician to print a current copy of the Patient List. 2. Note how many patients monitors are currently displayed on the Central Station. 3.
12 Completing the Installation Welch Allyn 2. When the System Menu appears in the upper right corner, click Quit Application. 3. Within 15 seconds, click Confirm. Note After clicking Confirm the Central Station screen changes colors and pauses for several seconds at a time. Type nothing during this time, until instructed to in the next step. 4. When computer’s name console login: appears on the screen, with a white background, the Central Station application is shutdown.
Installation Guide Completing the Installation 13 5. After a few moments, the system returns to # as the prompt. The file system is now protected. 6. If more than 5 minutes have passed and the system is still not displaying the # prompt, refer to the section“Common problems and solutions” on page 19. Rebooting the CPU To reboot the CPU: 1. Type sync and press Return. 2. Type sync and press Return again. 3. Type init 6 and press Return.

15 5 Verifying the Update Confirm upgrade installation Once the CPU and Central Station have restarted, the system map screen should be viewable on the display. Note If the system does not display the system map or the software appears to quit during startup, contact Welch Allyn Technical Support for immediate assistance. To confirm upgrade success: 1. On the Central Station screen: a. Move the pointer into the gray area in the upper right hand corner of the screen. b.
16 Verifying the Update Welch Allyn Confirming system performance It is important to verify proper operation of the system after the upgrade. Use the following table to assist. If you are unfamiliar with the system operation, ask a clinician familiar with system usage to assist. Test Verification Steps Power-Up System map is displayed on screen. Patient Connections All active patient monitors are displayed after the upgrade. • Compare with the previously printed Patient List as necessary.

19 6 Troubleshooting Common problems and solutions This section includes discussion about how to resolve some common problems that you may experience during the upgrade procedure. Most of the time these steps will resolve your problem. Contact Welch Allyn Technical Support if you are unable to resolve or experience a different issue. Keyboard and Password Entry problems. Problem Password entry is not working. Solution • Verify that you have the correct password.
20 Troubleshooting Welch Allyn Service Engineering System cannot locate the CDROM Problem System displays /cdrom/cdrom0: No such file or directory Solution 1 • Verify light on CDROM drive have stopped flashing. • Type cd /cdrom and press Return (there is a space before the /). • Type ls (that’s L and S in lowercase letters) and press Return. • If system return with just the # and no additional info, see section “Mounting the upgrade CD” on page 7.
Installation Guide Troubleshooting 21 Errors are displayed during the upgrade Problem Solution • Error messages are displayed in the Command Tool window during software installation. • The upgrade quits during the installation or displays an error message before quitting. • The system never displays the message “You have to reboot to make the switchover happen.” During software installation, the file system is examined.
22 Troubleshooting Welch Allyn Service Engineering Backing out of the install If for some reason that you experience the need to revert back the previous version of software, complete the following steps. Note 1. The process below does not require that you have the original Upgrade CD installed in the CPU. Open a Command Tool. See “Obtaining system access” on page 6. 2. Type su and press Return. 3. Enter your root password. 4. At the # prompt, type cd /export/home/acuity/bin and press Return.
23 A Printing the Log file The upgrade log file may be printed only from the # or % prompts. If the computer has any other prompts (>, ok, console login:, etc.) this process will fail. If there are any errors during Chapter 3 of this procedure, use this procedure to print the log file for submitting to Welch Allyn Technical Support. This process may also be used if you wish to print a record of the patch installation for your records.
24 Printing the Log file Welch Allyn Print the log file To print the log file: 1. Type lp -d printername /var/sadm/system/logs/upgrade.log_7.01.01* and press Return. Note Replace printername with the name of your System’s printer determined in the step 3 of “Determine the name of the System printer” on page 23. Type the command exactly as shown: • There is a space after lp and after -d. • Pay close attention to the direction of the slash.
