BEHAVIOR IN PREAMP AND LOCAL MODES ON SHARED DEVICES
Preamp Mode
• Every user operating in the Preamp mode has direct control of preamp analog gain.
• When preamp gain is adjusted on one system, it will change correspondingly on all systems.
• When a shared preamp is switched from Local mode to Preamp mode, its gain setting will take on the V-Gain level.
Local Mode
• Changes in preamp analog gain (Preamp mode) will not affect the channel input gain of any user who is operating in Local mode.
• A channel set to Local mode can adjust its gain without changing the preamp analog gain; Local level is controlled by V-Gain.
• Local users will see a green ring around the V-Gain knob, indicating the difference between the Preamp analog gain and the V-Gain
setting.
Basic FOH/MON Preamp Workflow
Shared Preamp Control is flexible–there are many ways to manage preamp controls shared by several users. A system can range from a
“manager-based” arrangement in which one user controls preamps and other users do not have access to them; to fully open systems, where
each user can always set preamp gain. Usually, a working system falls between the two and is based on an understanding among the users.
1) One System Controls the Preamps
1. Decide who will be the “manager” of the device. The manager is the system that initially assigns the device in the System Inventory and
initiates sharing and enables others to share it and control its preamps. In this example, the Monitor is the manager.
2. Share the device and do not select “Share Preamp Control.”
3. Assign I/O channels from the shared device to all eMotion LV1 inputs (Patch, Channel, or Mixer windows).
4. The manager sets the preamp analog gain for each preamp. This gain is established for all users of that preamp channel.
5. All users will set input to Local mode to track and compensate for preamp changes and to control their input level.
2) Preamps Set Up by the FOH; Control is Provided to All Users
1. Select a manager. In this example, it’s the FOH.
2. Allow device sharing of the I/O device and select “Share Preamp Control.”
3. FOH and another user, say, the monitor mixer, now assign I/O channels from the shared device to eMotion LV1 inputs.
4. Set up basic gain structure for all inputs using Preamp mode. Leave enough headroom to avoid overloading the analog circuitry.
5. Both FOH and Monitor can adjust the analog preamp gain of each channel—these changes will affect both FOH and Monitor.
6. Once analog preamp gain is set for each channel, switch both systems from Preamp mode to Local mode. Each system can now make
local gain adjustments. If preamp analog gain needs to be adjusted later on, any system (but likely the FOH) can do this from the Preamp
mode without affecting any other system.
