Additional Information for Identifying Electrical Shorts
Insomerareoccasionsduringinstallation,ahighpressurepointonthecablecanoccurandcauseabreakintheinsulation
betweenthecoreconductorandthemetalsheath.Thisopeningintheinsulationlayercancreateanelectricalshort,
eventhoughtheohmreadingfromonelineconductortotheotherlineconductorisnormalanddoesnotindicatea
circuitbreak.Intheserarecircumstances,acontinuitytestwillshownocontinuity(areadingofinnity)betweentheline
conductorandthegroundwireand/orbetweentheotherlinecoreconductorandtheground.Amegaohmmetercanbe
usedtotestthewireinsulationinthesecases.
Thereshouldbenocontinuity(indicatedbyaresistancereadingofinnity,notzero)betweeneachlineconductorand
ground.IftheohmmeterorPowerMan™revealscontinuitybetweenboththelineconductorandground,thereisashortin
the circuit.
8.2.4. Checking for Breaks or Shorts Using an Underground Fault Detector
Therearetwowaystolocatebreaksorelectricalshortswithundergroundfaultdetectors:
1.Abreakorshortcanmosteasilybefoundwithahighpotential(hipot)insulationtester,ahigh-voltagegeneratingdevice
thatgeneratesagroundorheatatthebreakpoint.Thehipotcanbeusedwithinfraredcamerastoscantheoorand
detecttheexactlocationofthebreak.ContactWarmlyYoursformoreinformationaboutrentingourtroubleshootingkit.
2.Abreakorshortcansometimesbefoundwithatimedomainreectometer(ShortStopfaultnder),whichmeasuresthe
distanceofthewirebetweenthetesterandtheshortpoint.Aoorplanwiththelayoutoftheinstallationisrequiredto
determinethelocationoftheshort.
