On-board refrigeration problems vary. In fact, they
are as individual as yachts, boats and their owners.
To provide an optimum solution for every application,
our ColdMachine programme includes a total of three
cooling unit series. WAECO ColdMachine cooling units
work with power-regulated Danfoss BDF compressors.
They are powerful, economical, silent in operation, ready
for connection to 12/24 volts DC and provide impeccable
operation in inclined positions. Each series comes with
complementary evaporators specifically designed to
match the performance of the compressor fitted.
Tailor-made cooling solutions for all applications

AEO electronics
E
very refrigeration system comprises an evaporator, a condenser
a
nd a compressor. WAECO offers a whole variety of condensers and
evaporators. To ensure efficient operation the three major components
of a refrigeration system must be perfectly balanced. WAECO
exclusively uses the adaptive speed Danfoss compressors BD35F
a
nd BD50F. They contribute significantly to the supreme efficiency of
W
AECO refrigeration systems – along with the following factors:
›
The compressor speed adapts precisely to the performance
r
equirements of the other system components (evaporator and
condenser).
› Both compressor types can be supplied with plate and fin
evaporators in a range of shapes and sizes. This ensures that
every shape of container can be equipped correctly. It also
m
akes optimum use of the compressor performance.
› The dynamically ventilated or water-cooled condenser units
always guarantee the necessary heat diffusion.
Air cooling offers many advantages. Except for the water cooled
CU-87 and CU-97 units, all ColdMachine cooling units are air-cooled.
They release the heat to the atmosphere through a dynamically
ventilated condenser. For ventilation, WAECO uses only brushless,
w
ear-free fans.
Water-cooled units normally require additional equipment and fitting,
w
hich, if not properly maintained, can be an additional source of
t
echnical risk. Even so, we do recommend water cooling in a few
special cases, e.g. where the cooling unit has to be installed in an
overheated engine room, or where the yacht will mostly be sailing in
tropical waters.
Otherwise, air-cooling is the more elegant and an equally efficient
solution because the air temperature at the ship’s hull below the
water line is barely higher than the water temperature.
The larger the surface of an evaporator, the more heat it can absorb,
a
nd the greater its refrigerating capacity.
With the same overall dimensions, fin-type evaporators have up to
five times more surface area than plate evaporators and hence a
higher performance. If the fin evaporator is equipped with small fans,
this increases the air exchange and also the performance. Such
ventilated evaporators ensure optimum cooling with low power
consumption even in tropical waters. They are also ideal for deep-
freeze refrigeration.
Anyone requiring only a small refrigerating capacity is equally well
s
erved with the less expensive plate-type evaporators. These offer
the additional advantage that ice cubes can be easily produced on the
plate surface.
What really counts is the optimum combination of compressor,
evaporator and condenser as well as the appropriate installation
location.
WAECO offers a wide range of designs for all components, so that even
the most awkwardly shaped space can be used. The best
location is below the water line, because here, the air is already
cooled by the water temperature. During installation, it is necessary to
ensure that the unit has adequate air circulation. This can be achieved
by simple slots or holes, or by means of the air exhaust hood, which
is available as accessory for series 80 and 90.
The connection between the evaporator and the compressor/
condenser unit is especially easy on WAECO products: the refrigerant
hoses have self-sealing valve couplings with a very small diameter.
