USING PENPARTNER The quickest way to learn about PenPartner is to become familiar with its appearance and features. As you explore, you will find the UltraPen easy to use for drawing and erasing, or as a mouse substitute. PenPartner can be used in all applications that support a mouse.
APPEARANCE AND FEATURES The PenPartner tablet and UltraPen include a variety of features.
USING THE ULTRAPEN Think of the tablet’s active area as a mapped representation of your computer screen. Wherever you place the UltraPen on the tablet’s active area, the screen cursor will jump to the corresponding point on the screen. For example, when you position your pen tip in the upper right corner of the tablet, the cursor appears in the upper right corner of your screen. This is called “absolute positioning,” and makes tracing possible—something you cannot do with a mouse.
POINTING The UltraPen controls a pointer (or cursor) on your screen. Screen cursors have different shapes, such as an arrow or I-beam, depending on the type of application you are running. Move the screen cursor by lifting the UltraPen and placing it at a new location on the tablet. The cursor instantly jumps to the new location (absolute positioning).
CLICKING Clicking. To click, tap the tablet once with the tip of the UltraPen, or touch the pen to the tablet with enough pressure to simulate pressing a mouse button. Double-clicking. To double-click, quickly tap the tablet twice in the same place with the pen tip. This is like clicking twice with a mouse button. Be sure to hold the UltraPen so that you press downward on the pen tip. Hint: You may find it easier to set the side switch to double-click automatically when pressed.
DRAGGING Dragging means moving a selected (highlighted) object on the screen. Point to the object, then press the UltraPen to the tablet and drag the pen along the tablet’s active area. The selected object will move across the screen. To select text with this method, move the screen cursor to the beginning of some text then press and drag the UltraPen across the tablet until the text is highlighted.
PROXIMITY The tablet can recognize the UltraPen’s position whenever it is within proximity, 5 mm (.2 inch), above the tablet’s active area. This enables you to trace a drawing or photograph as long as the pen tip remains within proximity height. Also, you do not have to touch the pen tip to the tablet in order to position the screen cursor or use the side switch. 5 mm (.
DRAWING WITH PRESSURE The UltraPen responds to the nuance and inflection of your hand movements, enabling you to create natural-looking pen and brush strokes. Many graphics applications have drawing tools that respond to the pressure you place on the UltraPen. For example, in some drawing programs sliders are used to vary brush characteristics (width, color, jitter, opacity, and graininess). These characteristics can be controlled by the UltraPen’s pressure sensitivity.
ERASING WITH EASE The eraser on the UltraPen works like the eraser on a pencil. In graphics applications that support the UltraPen’s eraser, you can erase intuitively and naturally—without manually selecting another tool. The eraser-aware application will automatically switch to the eraser tool. PenPartner will also erase in some non-graphics applications; though not pressure-sensitive you can use the eraser to select and delete text.
CARING FOR PENPARTNER Regular cleaning with a soft, damp cloth will help prolong the life of your tablet surface and pen tip. You can also use a very mild soap (such as dishwashing liquid) diluted with water. Do not use volatile liquids, such as paint thinner or benzene, because they may damage the plastic case. Keep the tablet in a clean, dry place and avoid extremes in temperature. Room temperature is best.
CUSTOMIZING PENPARTNER After you master the basics of using the tablet, you may want to customize the way your UltraPen works. Use the control panel to adjust the tip feel, simulate mouse buttons, or to change a variety of other settings.
OPENING THE CONTROL PANEL You customize your pen and tablet from the PenPartner control panel. For Windows: Open the Control Panel window by clicking on the Windows Start button. Then select Settings and Control Panel, and double-click on the PenPartner icon. Or... For Macintosh: From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels and double-click on the PenPartner icon. Double-click here to open the PenPartner control panel. Windows Control Panel shown above.
CUSTOMIZING THE PEN PenPartner’s control panel allows you to customize your pen and tablet. Balloon Help, which provides quick information and useful tips, is available for most control panel items. Software driver version. Returns control panel settings to factory defaults. Customizes amount of pressure needed to erase with the UltraPen. Closes control panel. Selects side switch function. Customizes amount of pressure needed to click or draw with the UltraPen.
ADJUSTING TIP FEEL The Tip Feel slider adjusts the sensitivity of the UltraPen tip. With one easy adjustment, you can set the UltraPen for the tip feeling you prefer when clicking or drawing pressure-sensitive lines. To set the amount of pressure needed to click or draw: In the PenPartner control panel, drag the Tip Feel slider to one of the five settings from Soft to Firm. Your changes take effect immediately.
MAKE DOUBLE-CLICKING EASIER Double-clicking with a pen is somewhat different than with a mouse. To double-click, quickly click twice on the same screen pixel. To make double-clicking easier: expand the tap area that accepts a double-click (the double-click distance), or set the pen’s side switch to automatically double-click when pressed.
ADJUSTING ERASER FEEL The UltraPen’s eraser is pressure sensitive, enabling you to erase naturally and expressively. Eraser Aware. Applications that support the UltraPen’s eraser are called eraser-aware. They take advantage of the pen’s eraser in different ways, depending on what makes sense for the application. Context Aware. When you use the eraser to select text or objects, PenPartner automatically senses whether the screen cursor is over an object that can be erased.
CHOOSING PEN OR MOUSE LIKE MOVEMENT You can choose how the screen cursor reacts to the motion of your UltraPen on the tablet: Pen Mode. When you select Pen Mode, the tablet acts as a mapped representation of your computer screen. Wherever you place the UltraPen on the tablet, the cursor jumps to the same corresponding point on the screen. This is called “absolute positioning.” Mouse Mode.
SIMULATING MOUSE BUTTONS You can set the side switch on the UltraPen to simulate mouse button functions. To simulate mouse buttons: 1. In the PenPartner control panel, open the side switch function pull-down menu. 2. Select a click option from the menu. Your changes take effect immediately. For Windows: Select Left Click, Left Double Click, Left Click Lock, Right Click, or Middle Click. For Macintosh: Select Click, Double Click, or Click Lock.
SIMULATING KEYBOARD MODIFIER KEYS Many applications use modifier keys to constrain sizing or the placement of objects. You can set the side switch on the UltraPen to simulate holding down the Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Option (Macintosh only), or Command (Macintosh only) modifier keys. To simulate keyboard modifier keys: 1. In the PenPartner control panel, open the side switch function pull-down menu. 2. Select Modifiers... from the menu.
RETURNING TO DEFAULT SETTINGS You can return to the tablet default settings at any time. In the PenPartner control panel, click on the Default button. Your changes take effect immediately. Returns control panel settings to factory defaults. Your tablet and UltraPen are now set to their original default conditions.
HAVING TROUBLE? Most of the time your tablet will work flawlessly. But if you are having trouble, WACOM recommends you do the following: 1. Refer to the troubleshooting procedures described in this chapter. 2. Look in the troubleshooting tables. Your problem may be described there and you can try the solution offered. 3. Open the PenPartner Readme file for late-breaking information. 4.
TROUBLESHOOTING WINDOWS TROUBLESHOOTING MACINTOSH TROUBLESHOOTING WINDOWS TROUBLESHOOTING If the PenPartner LED does not light after plugging in PenPartner, see the sections below: Checking USB cable connection(s), PCs, Verifying your computer is USB ready, and Testing the hardware, PCs. Checking USB cable connection(s), PCs Make sure your computer is turned on and the operating system has finished loading. 1. Verify that the USB cable is securely connected to a USB port. 2.
Verifying your computer is USB ready PenPartner requires Windows 98. Many PCs that shipped with Windows 95 have the USB port disabled in the BIOS. If you upgraded to Windows 98, verify that the USB ports are enabled in the BIOS and that all necessary system software has been installed. Refer to your system documentation or contact your system manufacturer for information on enabling USB support for your computer.
4. Now, without applying pressure to the pen tip, press the side switch; the status LED should again change from orange to green. 5. Turn the pen over; the status LED should change from orange to green when the eraser enters proximity. If any of the above tests failed, you may have a defective pen or tablet. See Contacting technical support.
Verifying your Macintosh is USB ready If the tablet LED does not light, your computer may not have the necessary USB software installed, or may not be configured properly. • If you have an iMac, you will need Macintosh OS 8.5, Mac OS ROM 1.2.1, and iMac Update 1.1 (located on the PenPartner CD-ROM). • If you added a USB interface card you must also install system software to support the USB card. • Otherwise, if your computer came from the factory with a USB port installed, it should be USB ready.
Resolving software conflicts If the WACOM tablet icon appears with a red X through it when starting your computer, the WACOM tablet driver failed to load properly.
3. Try changing the loading order of the tablet driver. Place a space before the name “Tablet Driver” in the Extensions folder. This causes the PenPartner driver to load earlier than other control panels. Restart your computer and watch for the WACOM tablet successful startup icon. 4. If the PenPartner driver still does not load, locate the conflicting extension in the System Folder. • Go to the System Folder and create a new folder titled, “Disabled Extensions”.
5. If the PenPartner driver still does not load, locate the conflicting control panel. • Go to the System Folder and create a new folder titled, “Disabled Control Panels”. Drag your third-party control panels to this new folder. • Restart your computer. If you see the successful startup icon, you have a conflict with one of the control panels. If the PenPartner driver still does not load, drag your third-party control panels back to the Control Panels folder and delete the Disabled Control Panels folder.
TROUBLESHOOTING TABLES If you encounter problems with your UltraPen or tablet, refer to the following tables. Your problem may be described here, and you can try the solution offered. Be sure to see the tables both for general problems and for your specific platform. If you have difficulty in an application, you can check the table for application-specific problems.
Double-clicking is difficult. The tip switch does not function. The side switch does not work. Be sure you are quickly tapping the tablet twice in the same place on the tablet’s active area. WACOM recommends using the side switch to double-click (review the technique in Clicking). Try increasing the Double Click Distance (see Make double-clicking easier). Try using a lighter Tip Feel (see Adjusting tip feel). Refer to Testing the hardware, PCs or Testing the hardware, Macintosh.
Pen selects everything or will not stop drawing. Eraser selects everything or will not stop erasing. There is a delay at the beginning of pen strokes when using the UltraPen for drawing or selecting. You have to press hard with the pen when clicking or drawing. Try increasing the pen tip click pressure in the PenPartner control panel by moving the Tip Feel slider toward Firm. Refer to Testing the hardware, PCs or Testing the hardware, Macintosh.
The screen cursor jumps back when using a mouse. Cannot move the cursor where you want to on the screen, or the line you are drawing does not line up with the location of the pointer in paint applications. When your pen is not in use, place it in the pen stand or some location near the tablet, but not on the tablet. Leaving your pen on the tablet may interfere with screen cursor positioning when using other input devices. Open the PenPartner control panel and verify that Pen Mode is selected.
WINDOWS-SPECIFIC PROBLEMS The PenPartner LED is on but the UltraPen does not move the screen cursor. After changing the display resolution, part of the tablet or display is unreachable. The UltraPen does not control the screen cursor when using a full screen DOS window in Windows 98. After pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, the screen cursor cannot be controlled with the UltraPen. The Windows HID driver was installed. Run Setup from the PenPartner CD-ROM and install the PenPartner driver software.
When the pen tip contacts the tablet surface, the cursor jumps to the top left corner of the screen, or the error message, “Unable to implement function”, appears within the PenPartner control panel. You may have had another manufacturer’s tablet, and the drivers are still loaded on your system: ACECAT: Edit your SYSTEM.INI. Go to the drivers=line in the [boot] section and remove awintab. Then go to the [drivers] section and remove the awintab=awintab.drv line.
APPLICATION-SPECIFIC PROBLEMS MetaCreations Painter: Versions of Painter older than V5.0.3 (running on Windows 98) may have intermittent problems with pressure not functioning. MetaCreations Expression: Versions of Expression older than V1.0.5 (running on Windows 98) may have intermittent problems with pressure not functioning. Microsoft Access V2.0 for Windows: Using the pen to click or double-click in a field causes the screen cursor to freeze. Upgrade to Painter V5.0.3 or greater.
