6 Troubleshooting the Burner
Background
The two sources of flame problems are:
Fuel
Ignition
Note: Make sure the blower runs before troubleshooting burner problems. If the
blower does not run, the burner will not fire. See topic Troubleshooting the Blower.
Procedure
Perform the procedure below to determine if the problem is with the fuel system or
with the ignition system.
1. Turn the machine on.
2. Turn the machine off.
Ignition
problems
For ignition system problems, check the following components in the sequence
listed.

If Then
There is a puff of smoke from the exhaust
stack when the burner attempts to fire,
the problem is most likely with the fuel
system. See fuel problems on the next
page.
There is no puff of smoke from the
exhaust stack when the burner attempts to
fire,
the problem could be with the ignition
system or the fuel system.
Check both the ignition system and the fuel
system.
Start with diagnosing the ignition system.
