Always do this before removing a cartridge. Volume Buttons Press “+” or “-” to adjust the sound volume. You can set the volume to the lowest setting to mute the sound entirely. Brightness Button Press this button to adjust the screen brightness.
BUTTON FUNCTION Exit Exit to the previous menu. Replay Repeat the story narration of the current page in Watch the Story, or repeat the question in Reading Games. Play/Pause Play or pause the story narration in Watch the Story. Bookmark / Index Save a bookmark for the current page in Watch the Story. Or go to the index page (available in select titles) to choose a page to begin Watch the Story. Help Replay instructions, or ask for a hint in Reading Games.
Storybook Cartridge Slot SD Card Cover and Slot Battery Compartment Battery Cover FEATURES FUNCTION Storybook Cartridge Slot Insert a V.Reader ® storybook cartridge (sold separately) into the slot to read and play. SD Card Cover and Slot Insert an SD card (not included). Please see pages 11 &12 for more information. Battery Compartment Insert 4 “AA” batteries (not included). For battery installation instructions, please see the next section.
• Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under adult supervision (if removable). • Do not mix old and new batteries. • Do not mix batteries of different types: alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (Ni-MH). • Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used. • Batteries are to be inserted with the correct polarity. • Exhausted batteries are to be removed from the toy. • The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.
How to Play STEP 1: Turn the V.Reader ® On Turn the V.Reader ® on by holding down the ON/OFF button for a few seconds. STEP 2: Personalize Your V.Reader ® The first time you power on the V.Reader ®, you will see My Name and My Avatar screens. These allow you to personalize your V.Reader ® by adding your name and a picture for your avatar. Use the keyboard to type in your name, and touch the green checkmark when you’re done. Use the blue arrows to scroll through the avatar choices, and touch one to choose.
Certificates Touch the Certificates icon to see any certificates earned by reading storybooks or playing Reading Games. Setup Touch the Setup icon to change your personal information, including name, avatar, welcome message, and music on/off. My Name: Type in your name. My Avatar: Choose an avatar. Welcome Message: Type in a welcome message. Music ON/OFF: Touch to turn the music on or off.
ACTIVITIES Once you have entered the built-in storybook by selecting the book icon in the PLAYROOM tab, there are three ways to play: Watch the Story, Reading Games, and Story Dictionary. Touch an icon to choose. Watch the Story: Read or listen to the whole story while watching the animations. Reading Games: Play 8 story-related reading games. Story Dictionary: Learn the definitions of vocabulary words in the story.
• Touch any word in the story text to hear the word read aloud. • Touch pictures to see animations and hear fun voices and sounds. • Press or to move to the next or previous page. NOTE: You can also turn the page by flicking the touch screen. • Press to listen to the current page’s story narration. • Press page. to save a bookmark for the current page, or to go back to the index • Press or the onscreen arrow icon to restart the automatic story narration.

Using the V.Reader® Touch Screen ® V.Reader ® has a touch-sensitive screen that you can interact with by either using your finger or the included pen. Lightly touch the screen with your finger or the pen. In Watch the Story mode, flick the screen to turn the page forward or back. NOTE: • Use only enough pressure to operate the game. Too much pressure may damage the touch screen. • Do not use the pen if it is broken. • Do not use any other pens on the touch screen other than the V.Reader ® pen.
SD R CA D C SD D AR 4 5 Connecting to a Computer • Download the setup program for Learning Lodge NavigatorTM from www. vtechkids.com/download for US or www.vtechcanada.com/toysdownload for Canada and install it onto your computer. • Insert an SD card into your V.Reader ®, as shown above. • Turn on your V.Reader ®. • Locate the USB port on the upper right-hand side of your V.Reader® and open the rubber port cover. • Insert the smaller end of the included USB cable into the USB port on your V.Reader ®.
VTech® Kidizoom® Photos and Videos All photos and videos captured with a VTech® Kidizoom Camera can be transferred without conversion for viewing on V.Reader ®. Files can be transferred using an SD card (not supplied) or via USB cable from a computer. V.Reader ® supports MJPEG formatted video playback only. Other video formats can be converted to work with V.Reader ® using third party software (not supplied).

TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Possible Reason Screen displays with Volume is turned no sound down Headphones are connected Screen turns on, then Battery power low immediately off No picture (or Program needs to incorrect picture) on be reset screen, and pressing the ON/OFF button has no effect. Solution Adjust the volume control. Unplug headphones from the headphone jack. Replace the battery. Disconnect all power supplies (batteries and adaptor), then reconnect all power supplies. Press the ON/OFF button.
