Getting started Telephone base and charger installation Install the telephone base and charger as shown below. Make sure that the electrical outlet is not controlled by a wall switch. If you subscribe to digital subscriber line (DSL) high-speed Internet service through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone line cord and telephone wall jack. The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference.
Getting started Wall mounting Your telephone comes ready for tabletop use. If you prefer to mount your telephone on the wall (optional), it is designed to mount on a standard telephone wall plate. To mount your telephone on the wall: 1. Position the top hole at the back of the telephone base against the top mounting stud on the wall plate. Mounting studs Telephone base 2. Align the holes on the telephone base against the mounting studs. Then slide the telephone base down until it locks into place.

Getting started Battery charging Once you have installed the battery, the screen indicates the battery status (see the table below). If necessary, place the handset in the telephone base or charger to charge the battery. For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. The battery is fully charged after 16 hours of continuous charging. See the table on page 47 for battery operating times.

Getting started Are you a new cable or VoIP subscriber? If your answer is yes, the existing telephone jacks in your home may no longer work. Your cable/VoIP service provider uses a different connection, separate from your old traditional telephone service, to connect the modem/router/terminal adapter installed in your home. To allow all existing telephone jacks to work, contact your telephone service provider for solutions, such as rewiring services (fees may apply).
Getting started Did you subscribe to voicemail service from your telephone service provider? Your telephone has a built-in answering system and supports voicemail feature offered by your telephone service provider (subscription is required, and fees may apply). Refer to Answering system and voicemail on page 36 for more information. Telephone settings Using the menu To enter the handset menu: 1. Press MENU when the telephone is not in use. 2. Press or until the screen displays the desired feature menu. 3. Press SELECT to enter that menu. • To return to the previous menu, press CANCEL. • To return to idle mode, press and hold CANCEL. CANCEL Handset ringer volume You can adjust the handset ringer volume or turn the ringer off. 1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use. 2.
Telephone settings Ringer tone You can change the handset ringer tone. 1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use. 2. Press or until the screen displays Ringers, then press SELECT. 3. Press or until the screen displays Ringer tone, then press SELECT. 4. The screen displays Tone: with the current setting flashing. Press or to choose 1, 2, 3, or 4. A sample of each ringer tone plays as you scroll through the choices. 5. Press SELECT to save your selection. You hear a confirmation tone.
Telephone settings Clear voicemail Voicemail is a feature available from most telephone service providers. It may be included with your telephone service, or may be optional. Fees may apply. If you subscribe to voicemail service offered by your telephone service provider, New voicemail and appear on the handset when you have new voicemail messages. Contact your telephone service provider for more information and assistance about using your voicemail service.
Telephone settings Key tone You can turn the key tone on or off. 1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use. 2. Press or until the screen displays Settings, then press SELECT. 3. Press or until the screen displays Key tone, then press SELECT. 4. Press or to choose On or Off, then press SELECT to confirm your selection. You hear a confirmation tone. Settings Key tone On Set date and time The answering system announces the date and time of each message prior to playing it.
Telephone settings Home area code If you dial local calls using only seven digits (area code not required), you can program your home area code so that when you receive a call within your local area, the telephone number is automatically stored in the caller ID log without the area code. To change the setting: 1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use. 2. Press or until the screen displays Settings, then press SELECT. 3. Press or until the screen displays Home area code, then press SELECT.
Telephone operation Make a call and then use the dialing keys (0-9) to dial the • Press telephone number. • The screen shows the elapsed time as you talk (in hours, minutes and seconds). • If the handset is moved out of range while on a call, it will beep three times. CANCEL Predial a call • Enter the telephone number using the dialing keys (0-9), then press to dial.
Telephone operation Call waiting When you subscribe to call waiting service from your telephone service provider, you hear an alert tone if there is an incoming call while you are on another call. • Press FLASH to put the current call on hold and take the new call. • Press FLASH at any time to switch back and forth between calls. CANCEL Temporary ringer silencing When the telephone is ringing, you can temporarily silence the ringer without disconnecting the call.
Telephone operation Find handset Use this feature to find all system handsets. To start paging: • Press /FIND HANDSET on the telephone base when not in use. All idle handsets ring and display ** Paging **. To end paging: • Press /FIND HANDSET on the telephone base. -OR• Press or any of the dialing keys (0-9, TONE or #) on a handset. • Press MUTE to turn off the ringer of a handset temporarily. Paging tone continues on the other handset. • Do not press and hold /FIND HANDSET for more than four seconds.
Telephone operation Join a call in progress (for multiple handset models only) You can use three handsets at a time on an outside call. To share an outside call: • When a handset is already on a call and you would like to join the call, press the other handset to join the call. on • To exit the call, press OFF or place the handset in the telephone base or charger. The call continues until all handsets hang up.
Telephone operation Redial list Each handset stores the five most recently dialed numbers. • When there are already five entries, the oldest entry is deleted to make room for the new entry. • Entries are shown in reverse chronological order. CANCEL Review the redial list 1. Press REDIAL when the handset is not in use. 2. Press , or REDIAL repeatedly to browse the redial list. Dial a redial entry 1. Press REDIAL when the handset is not in use. 2.

Directory About the directory The directory can store up to 30 entries. Each entry may consist of a phone number up to 30 digits and a name up to 15 characters. • Each handset directory is independent (for multiple handset Directory empty models only). Any additions, deletions or edits made on one handset are not reflected on other handsets. • When you access the directory with no records, the handset Directory full displays Directory empty.
Directory Add a directory entry 1. Enter the number when the handset is not in use. Press MENU, Directory then go to Step 3. -ORPress MENU when the handset is not in use, then press or Add contact to scroll to Directory, then press SELECT twice to choose Add contact. 2. When Enter number displays, use the dialing keys to enter the number. Enter number • Press DELETE to backspace and erase a digit. • Press and hold DELETE to erase the entire entry. • Press or to move the cursor to the left or right.
Directory Review the directory Entries are sorted alphabetically. To search the directory: 1. Press when the handset is not in use. 2. Press or to browse. -OR1. Directory Edit a directory entry 1. Search for the desired entry in the directory (see Review the directory or Alphabetical search on page 24). 2. When the desired entry appears, press SELECT. The handset Edit number 800-595-9511_ displays Edit number and the stored number. • If the number has more than 11 digits, the handset only displays the stored number. 3. Use the dialing keys to edit the number. • Press DELETE to backspace and erase a digit. • Press and hold DELETE to erase the entire entry.
Caller ID About caller ID This product supports caller ID services provided by most telephone service providers. Caller ID allows you to see the name, number, date and time of calls. Some names and numbers may not show because they are not available or blocked by the caller. The caller ID information shows after the first or second ring.
Caller ID Caller ID log If you subscribe to caller ID service, information about each caller appears after the first or second ring. If you answer a call before the caller information appears on the screen, it will not be saved in the caller ID log. • The caller ID log stores up to 30 entries. Each entry has up to 24 digits for the phone number and 15 characters for the name. If the telephone number has more that 15 digits, only the last 15 digits appear.
Caller ID Memory match When the incoming telephone number matches the last seven digits of a telephone number in your directory, the screen displays the stored name of the directory entry. For example, if Linda Jones calls, her name appears as Linda if this is how you entered it into your directory. • The number shown in the caller ID log is in the format sent by the telephone service provider. It usually delivers 10-digit telephone numbers (area code plus phone number).
Caller ID Dial a caller ID log entry 1. When in the caller ID log (see Review the caller ID log on page 28), press to browse to the desired entry. 2. Press to dial. or Save a caller ID log entry to the directory 1. When in the caller ID log (see Review the caller ID log on Edit number 800-595-9511_ page 28), press or to browse. 2. When the desired entry appears, press SELECT. The handset displays Edit number and the stored number. 3. Use the dialing keys to edit the number.
Caller ID Delete the caller ID log entries To delete an entry: 1. When in the caller ID log, press or to browse. 2. Press DELETE to delete the selected entry. You hear a confirmation tone. To delete all entries: 1. Press MENU when the phone is not in use. Press or to Delete all? select Caller ID log. 2. Press SELECT and then press or to select Del all calls. 3. Press SELECT and the screen displays Delete all? 4. Press SELECT to confirm. The handset displays Deleting...
Answering system settings Answering system Use the answering system menu of a cordless handset to turn on or off the answering system or message alert tone, set up the announcement message, activate the call screening, or change the number of rings, remote access code or message recording time. Announcement The telephone is preset with a greeting that answers calls with “Hello, please leave a message after the tone.” You can use this preset announcement, or replace it with your own.
Answering system settings Play the announcement 1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use. Play Del Rec 2. Press or to scroll to Answering sys, then press SELECT. [2] [3] [7] 3. Press SELECT to select Announcement. The handset displays Play [2] Del [3] Rec [7] and it announces, “To play, Playing... Stop press 2. To record, press 7.” [5] 4. Press 2 to play the current announcement. The handset displays Playing... Stop [5]. • Press VOL- to decrease or VOL+ to increase the listening volume.
Answering system settings Answer ON/OFF The answering system must be turned on to answer and record messages. When the answering system is turned on, the /ANS ON/OFF light on the telephone base turns on and ANS ON displays on the handset. To turn on or off with the telephone base: • Press /ANS ON/OFF to turn the built-in answering system on or off. When the answering system is turned on, it announces, “Calls will be answered.
Answering system settings Number of rings You can choose from two, three, four, five or six rings; or toll saver. With toll saver selected, the answering system answers after two rings when you have new messages, and after four rings when you have no new messages. This enables you to check for new messages and avoid paying unnecessary long distance charges if you are calling from outside your local area. 1. Answering system settings Message alert tone When the message alert tone is set to on, and there is at least one new message, the telephone base beeps every 10 seconds. To turn this feature on or off: 1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use. 2. Press or to scroll to Answering sys, then press SELECT. 3. Press or to scroll to Ans sys setup, then press SELECT. 4. Press or to scroll to Msg alert tone, then press SELECT. 5. Press or to choose On or Off, then press SELECT to confirm your selection.
Answering system operation Answering system and voicemail Your telephone has separate indicators for two different types of voice messages: those left on its built-in answering system and those left at your service provider’s voicemail. Your telephone’s built-in answering system messages and voicemail messages are separate. Each alerts you to new messages differently.
Answering system operation Message capacity The answering system can record and store up to 99 messages. Each message can be up to three minutes in length (see page 35 to change). The total storage capacity for the announcement, messages and memos is approximately 14 minutes. The actual recording time depends on individual message characteristics. Messages remain available for replay until you delete them.
Answering system operation Call screening To screen a call at the telephone base: If the answering system and call screening are on (see Call screening on page 33), the announcement and the incoming message broadcast at the telephone base while the call is answered by the answering system. Options while a message is being recorded: • Press /VOLUME or /VOLUME to adjust the listening volume. • Press /STOP to temporarily turn off the call screening.
Answering system operation Message playback If you have new messages, the telephone plays only the new messages (oldest first). If there are no new messages, the telephone plays back all messages (oldest first). When playback begins, you hear the total number of messages followed by the day and time of the message. After the last message, the telephone announces, “End of messages.” To play messages at the telephone base: Press /PLAY when the telephone is not in use.
Answering system operation Delete all messages You can only delete old (reviewed) messages. You cannot delete new messages until you review them. You cannot retrieve deleted messages. To delete all messages with the telephone base: 1. Press X/DELETE when the phone is not in use. The system announces, “To delete all old messages, press DELETE again.” 2. Press X/DELETE immediately. The system announces, “All old messages deleted.
Answering system operation Record, play or delete memos Memos are your own recorded messages used as reminders for yourself or others using the same answering system. You can record your own memos using a system handset. Playback and delete them in the same way as incoming messages. To record a memo: 1. Press MENU when the phone is not in use. 2. Press or to scroll to Answering sys, then press SELECT. 3. Press or to scroll to Record memo, then press SELECT.
Answering system operation Message window displays Window display Description 0 No messages. 1-99 Total number of old messages and memos recorded. The message number currently playing. 0-99 (flashing) Total number of new messages recorded, or the current message number during new message playback. The clock needs to be set. 1-99 & F (alternating) The answering system memory is full with total number of messages recorded. 1-8 The telephone base speaker volume level while adjusting.
Answering system operation Remote access A two-digit security code is required to access the answering system remotely from any touch-tone telephone. The preset code is 19. See Remote access code on page 34 to change it. 1. Dial your telephone number from any touch-tone telephone. 2. When the system plays your announcement, enter the two-digit security code. 3. Then you can enter one of the following remote commands. Command Description 1 Play all messages. 2 Play only new messages.
Appendix Screen messages Annc deleted Your recorded announcement is deleted. Call log empty There are no caller ID log entries. Directory empty There are no directory entries. Directory full The directory is full. Ended X:XX:XX You have just ended a call. Incoming call There is an incoming call. Line in use A system handset is in use, or another telephone on the same line is in use. Low battery The battery needs to be recharged.
Appendix Screen messages XX missed calls There are calls that have not been reviewed in the caller ID log. XX new messages There are new messages in the answering system. ** Paging ** The system handsets are being paged.
Appendix Telephone base lights On when the telephone line is in use. On when the answering system is answering a call. Flashes quickly when there is an incoming call. Flashes when another telephone sharing the same line is in use. IN USE /ANS ON/OFF On when the answering system is turned on. Handset screen icons The battery icon flashes when the battery is low and needs charging. The battery icon animates when the battery is charging. The battery icon becomes solid when the battery is fully charged.
Appendix Battery It takes up to 16 hours for the battery to be fully charged. When it is fully charged, you can expect the following performance: Operation Operating time While in use (talking*) Seven hours While not in use (standby**) Five days * Operating times vary depending on your actual use and the age of the battery. ** Handset is not charging or in use. In Canada, go to www.vtechcanada.com or call 1 (800) 267-7377. My telephone does not work at all. • Make sure the battery is installed and charged correctly (pages 4 and 5). For optimum daily performance, return the handset to the telephone base or charger after use.
Appendix Troubleshooting I cannot dial out. • Try all the above suggestions. • Make sure there is a dial tone before dialing. It is normal if the handset takes a second or two to synchronize with the telephone base before producing a dial tone. Wait an extra second before dialing. • If other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider (charges may apply). • Eliminate any background noise.
Appendix Troubleshooting The telephone does not ring when there is an incoming call. • Make sure the handset ringer volume is not set to off (page 11). • Make sure the telephone line cord and power adapter are plugged in properly (page 2). • The handset may be too far from the telephone base. Move it closer to the telephone base. • There may be too many extension phones on the telephone line to allow all of them to ring simultaneously. Unplug some of them.
Appendix Troubleshooting There is interference during a telephone conversation. My calls fade out when I am using the cordless handset. • The handset may be out of range. Move it closer to the telephone base. • If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (DSL - digital subscriber line) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone line cord and the telephone wall jack. The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference.
Appendix Troubleshooting The caller ID features are not working properly. • Caller ID is a subscription service. You must subscribe to this service from your telephone service provider for this feature to work on your telephone. • The caller may not be calling from an area which supports caller ID. • Both your and the caller’s telephone service providers must use equipment compatible with the caller ID service. • The caller ID information displays after the first or second ring.
Appendix Troubleshooting New voicemail and show on the handset and I don’t know why. • If New voicemail and appear on the handset, your telephone has received a signal from your telephone service provider that you have a voicemail message waiting for you to retrieve from them. Contact your telephone service provider for more information on how to access your voicemail. I cannot retrieve voicemail messages.
Appendix Troubleshooting The answering system does not record messages. • Make sure the answering system is on. • When the answering machine memory is full, it does not record new messages until some old messages are deleted. • If you subscribe to voicemail service, change the number of rings so that your answering system answers before your voicemail answers (page 34). To determine how many rings activate your voicemail, please contact your telephone service provider.
Appendix Troubleshooting I subscribe to a nontraditional telephone service that uses my computer to establish connections, and my telephone doesn’t work. • Make sure your computer is powered on. • Make sure your Internet connection is working properly. • Make sure that the software is installed and running for your nontraditional telephone service. • Make sure to plug your USB telephone adapter into a dedicated USB port on your computer.
Appendix Important safety instructions When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury, including the following: 1. Read and understand all instructions. 2. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product. 3. Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. 4.
Appendix Precautions for users of implanted cardiac pacemakers Cardiac pacemakers (applies only to digital cordless telephones): Wireless Technology Research, LLC (WTR), an independent research entity, led a multidisciplinary evaluation of the interference between portable wireless telephones and implanted cardiac pacemakers. Supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, WTR recommends to physicians that: Pacemaker patients • Should keep wireless telephones at least six inches from the pacemaker.
Appendix Maintenance Taking care of your telephone Your cordless telephone contains sophisticated electronic parts, so it must be treated with care. Avoid rough treatment Place the handset down gently. Save the original packing materials to protect your telephone if you ever need to ship it. Avoid water Your telephone can be damaged if it gets wet. Do not use the handset outdoors in the rain, or handle it with wet hands. Do not install the telephone base near a sink, bathtub or shower.
Appendix About cordless telephones • • • • • Privacy: The same features that make a cordless telephone convenient create some limitations. Telephone calls are transmitted between the telephone base and the cordless handset by radio waves, so there is a possibility that the cordless telephone conversations could be intercepted by radio receiving equipment within range of the cordless handset.
