Safetyisthemostimportantandobviousreasonfordoingapre-tripinspection.
Federalandstatelawsrequireinspectionperformedbythedriver.Federalandstate
inspectorsalsoinspectcommercialvehicles.Anunsafevehiclecanbeplaced"out
ofservice"untilthedriverorownercorrectsthedeciency.Ownersandoperators
shouldfamiliarizethemselveswithsections49CFR396.11and396.13concerning
Federalrequirementsforvehicleinspection.Certainotherlawsmayalsoapply.
Section49CFR396.13statesthatallmotorcarrierdriversmustcompleteawritten
reportattheendofeachworkdayforeachvehicleoperated,coveringmostofwhatis
coveredinthepre-triplist.Thereportshouldlistalldefectsordecienciesdiscovered
bythedriver.Apre-tripinspectionpreparesfortheend-of-workreport.
Startingonthenextpagearesuggestedguidelinestobeusedinperformingtruck,
tractorandtrailerpre-tripinspections.Dependingontheapplicationofthevehicle
beingused,theseguidelinesshouldbemodiedtoincludeothernecessaryinspection
points.Forexample,stepsandgrabhandlesshouldbecheckeddailyonrefusetrucks
becausetheoperatorisgettinginandoutofthecabmorefrequently.
Ifanycomponentorsystemdoesnotpassthisinspection,itmustbecorrectedbefore
operatingthevehicle.Wheneverequipmentrequiresadjustment,replacement,repair
orlubrication,refertotheServiceManualsorcontactanauthorizedV olvoTruck
dealerforthecorrectprocedures,specicationsandintervals.
Also,availablethroughthevehiclesdriverinformationdisplay(DID)isapre-trip
inspectionsystemthatwillassistinperformingthemanualpre-tripinspection.
Pre-TripAssistance
ThePre-TripAssistanceoptionisatooltoassistthedriverincompletingthepre-trip
inspectionofthevehicle.Thisoptionisnotasubstituteforacompletepre-trip
inspection.Ifanysystemofthevehicledoesnotpassinspection,theerrormustbe
correctedbeforeoperatingthevehicle.
Theavailablepre-triptestsincludeaSwitch/CircuitStatuscheck,ExteriorLight
Inspectioncheck,andaAirLeakagecheck.
