Volvo 1990 760 Model
Avoid repeated short attempts to start (fuel is injected every time the starter is engaged when engine is
cold). Allow the starter to operate for a longer time (but no more than 15-20 seconds).
Do not race a cold engine immediately after starting. Oil flow may not reach some lubricating points fast
enough to prevent engine damage.
5 Select desired gear. The gear engages after a slight delay, especially noticeable when selecting R.
CAUTION:
Engine should be idling; never accelerate until after you feel the gear engage! Too-rapid acceleration
immediately after selecting a gear will cause harsh engagement and premature transmission wear.
NOTE: Selecting position P or N when idling at a standstill for prolonged periods of time will help
prevent overheating of transmission oil.
6 Release the brakes and accelerate.
To stop the car, release the accelerator pedal and apply the brakes.
WARNING!
Always place gear selector securely in Park and apply parking brake before leaving vehicle. Never
leave car unattended with engine running.
Always open the garage doors fully before starting the engine inside a garage to ensure adequate
ventilation. The exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which is invisible and odorless but very
poisonous.
Engine warm-up - initial driving procedure
Experience shows that engines in vehicles driven short distances are subject to abnormally-rapid wear
because the engine never reaches normal operating temperature. It is therefore beneficial to reach normal
operating temperature as soon as possible. This is best achieved by driving with a light foot on the
accelerator pedal for a few minutes after starting, rather than prolonged idling.
