The fairly rare self-conducting MOSFET is very similar to the con-
ventional junction FET (JFET), except the gate terminal is isolated
from the two other terminals. The input resistance of these devices
cantypicallybehigherthan1000MΩwithnegativeandpositive
gate voltages.
Self-conducting MOSFETs are char-
acterized by the gate-source voltage
required to control the drain-source
current.
Modern self-conducting MOSFETs are typically only as N-channel
MOSFETs and conduct the current even when there is no voltage
between the gate and the source. The device can only be switched
off,ifthegatedropssignicantlymorenegativelythanthesource
connecting terminal (e.g. -10 V). This characteristic is what makes
them so similar to conventional JFETs.
