Using Linux and UNIX Custom Information Types
You can have VCM monitor and enforce regulatory compliance standards and best practices on
configuration files on Linux and UNIX platforms. To ensure the compliance of these files, you create
custom information types (CITs) and filters so that VCM can collect data from the configuration files and
the content in those files.
Each custom information type includes an identification expression and a parser directive. VCM uses the
custom information data class (CIDC) that you associate with the CIT to parse the Linux and UNIX
configuration files. VCM extracts the desired properties and values from the configuration files based on
the parser used to parse the files, and returns the properties and values to VCM so that VCM can report
on the compliance of Linux and UNIX platforms at the file content level.
File Types that VCM can Parse
The types of files that VCM can parse include tabular, key/value, tree, well-formed XML and other well-
described files, ini, and shell script formatted files.
Parsers for Supported File Types
To parse the content of Linux and UNIX configuration files, or other user-defined files, you must use the
correct type of parser. You can also write custom parsers for VCM to handle files of complex formats.
