Chapter 5 Working with Configurations
Whenyoudeployaconfiguration,youcanspecifywhethertodeployaconfiguration
withnetworkfencing.Fencingisanarchitecturethatisolatesor“fences”groupsof
virtualmachinesonthesamenetworkfromothermachines.Fencingallowsyoutouse
multiplecopiesofidenticalconfigurationssimultaneously.Withoutfencing,thisis
usually
notpossiblebecauseofIPaddressormachinenameconflicts.
Deployingaconfigurationinfencedmodeplacesallthevirtualmachinesonasingle
ESXServerhost.Youmusthaveahostconnectedtothedatastorewherethetemplates
thatserveasthebasisofthisconfigurationreside.Thehostmust
haveenoughresources
topassVMware Infrastructureadmissioncontrolsforvirtualmachines.
Formoreinformationaboutfencing,reasonsforoptions,andconsequencesof

Whenyouinitiallydeployaconfigurationbasedontemplateswith
guest
customizationenabled,theconfigurationgoesthroughthecustomizationprocess
whichinvolvesmultiplerebootsbasedonwhetherthevirtualmachinesuseSIDgenor
Microsoft®Sysprep.Donotshutdownthevirtualmachinesuntilthecustomizationis
complete.Youcanlogintothesystemandverifysettingssuchasthecomputer
name

To deploy a configuration with default preferences
1Intheleftpane,clickServices.
2MovethepointerovertheservicenameandchooseDetailsfromthemenu.
3Movethepointeroverthe
configurationnameandchooseDeploywithdefaults
fromthemenu.
Stage Managerdeploystheconfigurationwithdeploymentoptionsfromyouruser
preferencesandthevirtualmachineconsoleiconsforthatconfigurationbecome
active.See“SettingUserPreferences”onpage 25.
To deploy a configuration without default preferences
1Intheleftpane,clickServices.
2Movethepointerovertheservicename
andchooseDetailsfromthemenu.
3MovethepointerovertheconfigurationnameandchooseDeployfromthemenu.
