Chapter 4 Virtual Desktop Deployment
Automated Desktop Pools
Automateddesktoppoolscontainoneormoredynamicallygenerateddesktopsthat
areautomaticallycreatedandcustomizedbyViewManagerfromaVirtualCenter
virtualmachinetemplate.Desktoppoolsofthistypecanbeeither:
Persistent—Desktopsinthistypeofpoolareallocatedstaticallyinordertoensure
thatusersconnecttothesamesystemeachtimetheylogin.Desktopassignment
takesplacethefirsttimetheuserconnects.
Non‐persistent—Desktopsinthistypeofpoolareallocateddynamicallywhenthe
userlogsin,andarereturnedtothepoolwhentheuserdisconnects.
Automateddesktoppoolscanusethelinkclonefeaturetorapidlydeploydesktops
fromasingle“ParentVM”.However,thissectiondescribesadeploymentthatdoes
not
usethisfeature.Formoreinformationaboutlinkclones,includingthedeployment
procedure,refertoChapter 6,“ViewComposer,”onpage 115.
Virtual Machine Templates
Inordertocreateanautomateddesktoppoolyoumustfirstcreateavirtualmachine
templateinVirtualCenter.Thetemplateiscreatedbyright‐clickingapreviously
configuredguestsystemvirtualmachineinVirtualCenterandselectingeitherofthe
followingentriesfromthecontextmenu:
ClonetoTemplate—selectthisoptionifyouwanttousetheselectedguestsystem
asthebasisforanewtemplatewithoutalteringthevirtualmachineitself.Ifyou
selectthisoptionyouwillbepresentedwithasetupwizardthatasksyouto
providethenameofthetemplate,
andenvironmentalinformationconcerning
whereyouwantthetemplatetoresideandthediskformatitshoulduse.
ConverttoTemplate—selectthisoptionifyouwanttochangetheguestsystem
intoatemplate.Thisprocessisinstant.
