Preparing a Parent VM
TheParentVMisusedbylinkedclonedesktopsasthebaseimageforeachlinked
desktopclone.ForaParentVMtobeusedbyViewManagerinalinkedclonedesktop
deployment,youmustfirstinstalltheViewAgentonitsoperatingsystem.
Makesurethatyouhaveadministrative
rightstotheParentVMandthatthefollowing
prerequisitesareinplace.EnsurethattheParentVM:
 IsjoinedtotheActiveDirectorydomaininwhichyouwantlinkedclonedesktops
toreside.
 Networkingsettings(proxies,andsoforth)areproperlyconfigured.
 UsesDHCPinordertoacquireitsIPaddress.
 SystemdiskistobeattachedtotheSCSI(0:0)VirtualDeviceNode.Thisproperty
canbeconfiguredfromwithinvCenterServer.
 Operatingsystempowersettingsaresettoremainonatalltimes.
 Systemdiskcontainsasinglevolume(multiplevirtualdisksaresupported).
 TheViewAgentserviceisinstalledandisrunning.
Ifyouhavenotalreadydoneso,installthelatestoperatingsystemandapplication
servicepacksandpatchesontheParentVM.
DHCP Lease Removal
ItisrecommendedthatyoureleaseanyDHCPinformationthatmayexistontheParent
VMsothataleasedIPaddressisnotreplicatedamongstthelinkedclonesinthepool.
YoucanreleaseaDHCPleasebyopeningacommandpromptontheParentVMand
enteringthefollowing:
ipconfig /release
CAUTIONDonotattempttodeployclonesfromaParentVMthatcontainsmorethan
onevolumeastheresultofdiskpartitioning.Multiplepartitionsarenotsupportedby
theViewComposerservice.
NOTEForautomatedupdatingofViewAgentinlargeenvironments,VMware
recommendsusingstandardWindowsupdatemechanismssuchasAltiris,SMS,
LanDesk,BMC,orothersystemsmanagementsoftware.
