Creating a Nonreplicated Virtual Disk for Paging File
Storage
Inthedefaultconfiguration,Windowscreatesitspagingfileonthesystemdisk
(typicallyC:).Pagingfilescreatedinthislocationarealwaysreplicatedwhenyouuse
areplicateddatastore.Youcanavoidreplicationofpagingfilesbycreatingavirtual
disk(.vmdkfile)onanonreplicateddatastoreand,on
eachvirtualmachineina
protectiongroup,configuringWindowstocreateitspagingfileonthatdisk.SRM
detectsthatanyvirtualmachineconfiguredthiswaydependsonatleastone
nonreplicatedvirtualdisk(thepagingfiledisk)andremovesthatvirtualmachinefrom
itsprotectiongroup.Youmustexplicitly
designateacopyofthatvirtualdiskfileatthe
recoverysitefortherecoveredvirtualmachinetouse.
Tosimplifytherepetitionofthisprocedureforeveryvirtualmachineinaprotection
group,youcancreateavirtualdiskfiletemplateandthencloneittoprovide
nonreplicatedpagingfile
disksforvirtualmachinesatbothsites.
To force virtual machines to use nonreplicated paging file storage
1Attheprotectedsite,createatemporaryvirtualmachine.
2Onthetemporaryvirtualmachine,createanewdisk.
Storethediskfileinalocationwhereyoutypicallystorevirtualmachinetemplates.
3Poweronthetemporaryvirtualmachine,thencreateandformatapartitionon
the
newdisk.
4Disconnectthenewdiskfromthetemporaryvirtualmachine.
