5 On the Common Rules page, specify the I/O lter services to activate for the virtual machine.
You can combine I/O lters from dierent categories, such as replication and caching, in one storage
policy. Or create dierent polices for each category. You can use only one lter from the same category,
for example caching, per storage policy.
a Select Use common rules in the storage policy.
b From the Add rule drop-down menu, select an I/O lter category.
Option Description
Replication
Replicates all write I/O operations between a virtual machine guest OS
and virtual disks to an external target location, such as another host or
cluster.
Caching
Congures a cache for virtual disk data. Uses a local ash storage
device to cache the data and increase the IOPS and hardware utilization
rates for the virtual disk.
c From the Select Value drop-down menu, select the lter.
The page expands to display data service capabilities and default values that the lter supports.
d Specify values for the rule and click Next.
6 On the Rule Set page, specify storage placement requirements and click Next.
N If you plan to migrate the virtual machine with I/O lters across dierent types of datastores, for
example between VMFS and Virtual Volumes, make sure that the VM storage policy includes rule sets
for every type of datastore you are planning to use. For example, if you migrate your virtual machine
between the VMFS and Virtual Volumes datastores, create a mixed VM storage policy that includes s
tag-based rule for the VMFS datastore and rules for the Virtual Volumes datastore.
7 On the Storage Compatibility page, review the list of available datastores and click Next.
To be compatible with the I/O lter policy, datastores must be connected to host with I/O lters and
satisfy storage requirements of the policy.
8 Complete the creation of the storage policy and click Finish.
The new policy is added to the list.
