Send Queue
vCenterServerHeartbeatconsiderstheactiveserver’ssendqueueasunsafebecausethedatainthisqueuehas
notyetbeenreplicatedacrosstheVMwareChanneltothepassiveserverandthereforecouldbelostinthe
eventofafailover.Asaresultoffailover,somedatalossisinevitable,
withtheexactamountdependingonthe
relationshipbetweenavailableVMwareChannelbandwidthandtherequireddatatransmissionrate.Ifthe
requireddatatransmissionrateexceedsavailableVMwareChannelbandwidth,thesendqueuefills.Ifthe
availableVMwareChannelbandwidthexceedstherequireddatatransmissionrate,thesendqueueempties.
ThissituationismostcommonlyseeninaWANenvironment,whereVMwareChannelbandwidthis
restricted.InaLANthatnormallyhashighbandwidthonadedicatedchannel,thesizeofthesendqueueis
zeroornearzeromostofthetime.OnaservernotprotectedwithvCenterServer
Heartbeat,alldatais
technicallyunsafeandsubjecttolossiftheserverfails.
Receive Queue
Thepassiveserver’sreceivequeueisconsideredsafebecausethedatainthisqueuealreadywastransmitted
acrosstheVMwareChannelfromtheactiveserver,andisnotlostintheeventofafailover,whichappliesall
updatestothepassiveserveraspartoftheprocess.
Bothsendand
receivequeuesarestoredondiskbydefaultinthe<VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat
Install Directory>\R2\log directory,withaquotaconfiguredforthemaximumpermittedqueuesize
(bydefault,1GBoneachserver).Youcanconfigureboththequeuelocationandthequota.
Twomethodstosetthequeuesize:
UsingvCenterServerHeartbeatConsole
aStartvCenterServerHeartbeat
bOpenthevCenterServerHeartbeatConsole,andselectData:TrafficQueues.
cClickConfigure.
dSettheAllowamaximumvalueandclickOK.
eShutdownandrestartvCenterServerHeartbeatforthechangetotakeeffect.Youarenotrequiredto
stopprotectedapplications.
UsingtheServerConfigurationwizard
aShutdownvCenterServerHeartbeat.
bOpentheServerConfigurationwizardandclicktheLogstab.
cSettheMaximumDiskUsagevalueandclickFinish.
dStartvCenterServerHeartbeat.
MaxDiskUsage Error Messages
Thefollowingerrormessagesdisplaywhenavailablediskspaceontheserversisexceeded.

(VCChannelExceededMaxDiskUsageException)
Thismessageindicatesthatyouhaveexceededtheamountofallocateddiskspacereservedforthequeue.
Symptom
vCenterServerHeartbeatexceedsitspreconfiguredqueuesize.

OTEvCenterServerHeartbeatisasymmetricalsystemandcanoperatewitheitherserverintheactiverole.
Forthisreason,thequeuesizeisalwayssettothesamevalueforbothservers.
