Chapter 10 Troubleshooting
Symptom
Themessagejava.io.IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote
hostappearsintheactiveserverʹsNFLog.txtfile,andtheVMwareChannelconnectionbetweentheservers
islost.
Causes
ThisunusualconditionpointstoanapplicationorWindowsexperiencingafaultonthepassiveserver.A
suddenrestartofthepassiveservercanoccurduetothefollowingcauses:
Theserverisconfiguredforautomaticsoftwareupdatemanagementandsomeupdatesforcetheserver
torestart
AsoftwareorOperatingSystemissuethatoccasionallyfailsandrequiresasystemrestart
TheNeverfailServerR2serviceexperiencesproblems,doesnotrespond,orterminatesunexpectedly
Resolution
Toresolvetheissue,makethefollowingchecks.
DeterminethelikelysourcebyexaminingtheWindowseventlogs.
Iftheserverdoesnotdisplayevidenceofasystemrestartorunresponsiveapplication,oneorbothofthe
VMwareChannelNICscouldbeforcingachanneldisconnection.See“HardwareorDrive rIssueson

Passive Server Does Not Meet Minimum Hardware Requirements
Inadequatehardwarecancausechanneldropsandresultinpoorperformance.
Symptom
ThedataratebetweentheserversisveryfastduringaFullSystemCheckandtheVMwareChanneldrops.
Cause
ThepassiveserverdoesnotmeettherecommendedhardwarerequirementsforvCenterServerHeartbeator
itmeetstherequirements,butismuchlesspowerfulthantheactiveserver.Theunderpoweredservercannot
applythereceivedreplicationdatafromtheactiveserverattheratethatthedataissenttothe
passiveserver.
Resolution
ToavoidreinstallingvCenterServerHeartbeat,upgradethehardware,suchasmemoryorCPU,onthepassive
server.Establishtheidentity(PrimaryorSecondary)oftheaffectedserverbeforeyouperformtheupgrade.
Hardware or Driver Issues on VMware Channel NICs
NICmalfunctionsandoldorincorrectdriverscancausechanneldropsresultinginpoorperformance.
Symptom
TheVMwareChannelintermittentlydropsordisconnectsandreconnects.
Causes
