Synchronization Failures
WhenyoustartvCenterServerHeartbeat,afullsystemcheckoccurstoverifythefollowing:
Allprotectedregistrykeysandvaluesfromtheactiveserverarepresentonthepassiveserver.
Allprotectedfileandfolderstructuresfromtheactiveserverarepresentonthepassiveserver.
Afterthefullsystemcheckcompletes,theFileSystemStatusandtheRegistryStatusdisplayasSynchronized.
However,theFileSystemStatusortheRegistryStatuscanalsodisplayasOutofsyncorSynchronized
and
busyprocessing.Sometypicalscenariosaredescribedwithpossiblecausesandworkarounds.
Services Running on the Passive Server
Servicesrunningonapassiveserverisnotnormalbehaviorandcanpreventsynchronization.
Symptom
FileSystemStatusisOutofsyncorSynchronizedandbusyprocessing.
Cause
Aservicerunningonthepassiveserveropensaprotectedfileforexclusiveaccess.IfvCenterServerHeartbeat
attemptstoupdatethisopenedfile,theApplycomponentlogsthefollowingerrormessage:
[N29]The passive VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat server attempted to access the file: {filename}.
This failed because the file was in use by another application. Please ensure that there are no
applications which access protected files running on the passive.

Resolution
Untilthefileisclosedonthepassiveserver,vCenterServerHeartbeatreportsthefilestatusandtheFileSystem
StatusasOutofsync.
To resolve the Out of sync status
1SetProtectedApplicationservicestoManualonbothserversandverifythattheyarenotrunningonthe
passiveserver.
2SetRecoveryActionstoTakeNo
Action.YoucansetthisfromtheServiceControlManager(SCM)forthe
ProtectedApplicationservices.Otherwise,theSCMrestartstheProtectedApplicationservices.
3Verifythatfilelevelantivirusisnotpartoftheprotectedsetasthefilelevelantivirusandthe
correspondingservicesarerunningonbothmachines.
VMware Channel Incorrectly Configured
IftheVMwareChannelisnotproperlyconfigured,itcannotinitiatethehandshaketoestablish
communicationsthroughtheVMwareChannelconnection.
Symptom
FailuretoestablishtheVMwareChannelconnectionpreventsafullsystemcheck,therebyleavingtheFile
SystemStatusandRegistryStatusasOutofsync.
