Chapter 3 Server Protection
WhenthevCenterServerHeartbeatpairestablishesaconnection,ittriggersafilesynchronizationand
verificationprocesstoensureallprotectedfilesonbothserverareidentical.Theprocesscheckseach64Kblock
ofeachprotectedfileandperformsachecksumtodeterminewhethertheblocksdiffer.Iftheblocksare
the
same,theblockismarkedassynchronized.Iftheblocksdiffer,thentheblockisreplicatedtothepassiveserver
andthenmarkedassynchronized.Thefileverificationandsynchronizationprocessisfinishedafterallblocks
ofallstipulatedfilesaremarkedassynchronized.
Monitoring the Status of Servers
TheServer:Monitoringpageprovidesadditionalinformationaboutthestatusofcommunicationsbetween
theserverswithinthepair.Thegraphicalrepresentationprovidesanoverviewofthestatusof
communicationsbetweentheservers.Agreenchanneliconindicatesthatthechannelisconnectedandhealthy
whileayellowdashedchanneliconindicates
thatcommunicationsarenotoperationalbetweentheindicated
servers.Inadditiontotheheartbeatsentbetweentheservers,VMwarevCenterServerHeartbeatalsosendsa
pingtoensurethattheserversremainvisibletooneanother.
Configuring Heartbeat Settings
TheServer:Monitoringpageprovidesthreeconfigurationfeatures:ConfigurePings,ConfigureFailover,
andConfigureResponseTimes.
Configure Pings
IPaddressesofallNICsusedfortheVMwareChannelareidenticalduringinstallation.vCenterServer
Heartbeat,bydefault,addedthoseIPaddressestotheServer:MonitoringPingConfigurationdialog.You
canaddadditionaltargetstothelistforeachserver’schannelconnectionintheeventofredundantNICs.The
settings
intheServer:MonitoringPingConfigurationdialogallowvCenterServerHeartbeattosendpings
acrosstheVMwareChannelinadditiontotheheartbeat(“I’malive”messages)toconfirmthattheserveris
stilloperationalandprovidingservice.
To configure pings
1ClickConfigurePingstoopentheServerMonitoring:PingConfigurationdialog.
2Clickon
thePingSettingstabtoconfigurethePingInterval.
3ClickonthePingRoutingtabtoaddadditionalIPaddressforredundantNICs.
Configure Failover
TheFailovertimeoutdictateshowlongvCenterServerHeartbeatwaitsforamissedheartbeatbeforeittakes
apre‐configuredaction.Thisvalueissetto60secondsbydefault.
