Back Up the Orchestrator Configuration Data
Use the data migration tool that is included in the vCenter Server 4.1 installation media to back up the existing
Orchestrator configuration and restore it to a new Orchestrator instance.
Migrating Orchestrator configuration settings by using the data migration tool is only possible when
Orchestrator is installed silently with vCenter Server. For instructions about migrating configuration settings
for a standalone Orchestrator instance, see “Export the Orchestrator Configuration,” on page 57 and “Import
the Orchestrator Configuration,” on page 58.
For detailed information about backing up and restoring the existing vCenter Server database and
configuration, see the vCenter Sphere Upgrade Guide.
Prerequisites
n
Log in to the 32-bit source machine as an administrator.
n
Verify that vCenter Orchestrator 4.0 or an update release is installed and configured.
n
Stop the VMware vCenter Orchestrator Configuration and VMware vCenter Orchestrator Server services.
Procedure
1 Download the vCenter Server installation package from the VMware Web site.
Option Description
Use ISO image
The filename is VMware-VIMSetup-
xx
-4.
a.b
-
yyyy
.iso, where a and b are
major and minor version, xx is the two-character language code, and yyyy is
the build number.
Use ZIP archive
The filename is VMware-VIMSetup-
xx
-4.
a.b
-
yyyy
.zip, where a and b are
major and minor version, xx is the two-character language code, and yyyy is
the build number.
2 Extract the files from the archive and in the C:\
install_directory
\ directory, double-click the
autorun.exe file.
3 When the vCenter Server Installer page appears, click Explore media.
4 Locate and open the datamigration folder.
5 Extract the files from the datamigration.zip archive to a writeable filesystem (for example,
datamigration folder) on the source machine.
6 Run the backup script of the data migration tool.
a Run the MS-DOS cmd command.
b Navigate to the datamigration folder.
c At the command prompt, type backup.bat and press Enter.
The script checks whether vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager are installed and meet the
migration prerequisites. The script then proceeds to the backup of the vCenter Orchestrator configuration.
7 Respond to the prompts and wait for the script to complete.
If the script fails, check the generated backup.log file that is located in the datamigration\logs folder.
The existing Orchestrator configuration is successfully exported. The file that stores the system settings is
named vco.backup.vmoconfig and is located in the datamigration\data\vco folder.
