Chapter 7 Working with Configurations
Combine Workspace Configurations
Youcancombineworkspaceconfigurationsbycloningsomeorallofaconfiguration’svirtualmachinesto
anotherconfiguration.Ifyouhaveaccesstomorethanoneworkspace,youcancombineconfigurationsfrom
differentworkspaces.Youcannotcombineconfigurationsfromdifferentorganizations.
Full Clones and Linked Clones
Whenyoucombineconfigurations,youcanconsolidatethesourceconfiguration’svirtualmachinesduringthe
cloningprocesstocreatefullclonesofthevirtualmachines.Typically ,youshouldnotcreatefullclones,unless
youplantodismantlethestorageandmovetheconfigurationtoadifferentserver,oryouneedtomaximize
theperformanceofspecificvirtualmachines(forexample,forcertainproduction‐levelvirtualmachines).
Afull‐cloneoperationcopiesallofavirtualmachine’sdeltadisksanditsbasediskandconsolidatestheminto
anewbasedisk.Theoriginalbasediskremainsunchanged.Afull‐cloneoperationtakeslongerthan
a
linked‐cloneoperation.Youcannotmakeafullcloneofadeployedconfiguration.
Alinked‐cloneoperationcreatesadeltadiskinsteadofcopyinganentirevirtualharddisk.Thisoperation
addressesvirtualmachineproliferationbyusingreferentialprovisioning,aprocessthatinvolvesstoringnew
changesbutrefersbackto
achainofdeltadisks.Foreachclone,Lab Managerfreezestheoriginaldeltadisk
andcreatesanewone.
Whenyoucreateaclone,Lab Managerassignsthesamenetworkparameterstotheclonedvirtualmachines.
Ifyoudeploytheoriginalandclonedconfigurationsatthesametime,duplicateIPaddresserrors
occurunless
youdeployoneoftheconfigurationsinfencedmode.
To combine workspace configurations
1MovethepointerovertheconfigurationnameandselectClone.
2Specifythedestinationworkspace,ifapplicable.
3 SelectExistingConfigurationandselectadestinationconfiguration.
4 (Optional)TypechangesummarytextthatwillappearontheHistorytabofthesourceand
destination
configurations.
5Specifythetypeofclone.
Iftheconfigurationisdeployed,youcanonlycreatelinkedclones.
6Specifythevirtualmachinestoclone.
Ifyouarecreatingfullclones,selectadatastore.
7ClickOK.
Add a Network to a Workspace Configuration
Virtualmachinesinaconfigurationcanconnecttoanynetworkintheconfiguration.Ifyouwanttoconnecta
virtualmachineNICtoadifferentnetwork,youmustfirstaddthenetworktotheconfiguration.
Aconfigurationcanincludeanetworktowhichnovirtualmachinesconnect.
To add a network to a configuration
1Movethepointerover
theconfigurationnameandselectOpen.
2ClicktheNetworkstab.
Thepagedisplaysthenetworkscurrentlyavailabletovirtualmachinesintheconfiguration.
3ClickAddNetwork.
4 Selectanetwork.
Thelistofnetworksincludestheavailablephysicalnetworksandvirtualnetworks.
