Export a Virtual Machine Template to an SMB Share
YoucanexportanundeployedvirtualmachinetemplatetoanSMBshare.Thisoperationrequiresthatyou
haveasharedfolderwithfullcontrolpermissionsattheshareandfilesystemlevel.
Exportingcantakeanextendedperiodoftime,dependingonthesizeofthevirtualmachine.Bydefault,
Lab Manager
timesoutwhenexportoperationstakelongerthantwohours.See“ConfiguringGeneral
Preferences”onpage 135tomodifythetimeoutforSMBexports.
ExportoperationsrequireanopenSMBportontheESXhosts.AlthoughLab Manageropenstheportduring
installation,youneedtomakesurethattheportwasnot
closedaftertheinstall.Tochecktheportstatus,run
esxcfg-firewall -q smbClientoneachhost.
Beforeexportingavirtualmachinetemplate,LabManagerconsolidatesit.Thisresultsinanincreaseinthe
diskspacerequiredtostorethetemplate.Theexportedtemplatemightalsorequireasignificantamountof
diskspacedepending
onthesizeofitsconsolidatedvirtualdisk.
WhenyouexportatemplatetoanSMBfileserver,thedatastoreonwhichthetemplateresidesmustbe
connectedtoanESXhost.IfthedatastoreisonlyconnectedtoanESXihost,youcannotexportthetemplateto
anSMB
fileserver.YoucanstillexportthetemplatetovCenter.
To export a virtual machine template
1Intheleftpane,clickVMTemplates.
2MovethepointeroverthetemplatenameandselectExport.
3Providethelocationandusercredentials:
TypetheUNCpathoftheSMBshare(relativetotheLab Managerserversystem)whereyouwantto
storethefiles.UseEnglishcharactersfortheUNCpath,forexample,Asamplepathis
\\10.6.1.246\VMwareLM\ExportTemplates.
IftheUNCfolderrequiresauthentication,typetheusernameandpasswordtoaccessthefiles.
4ClickOK.
Export a Virtual Machine Template to vCenter
Bydefault,systemadministrators,administratorswithrightsattheorganizationandworkspacelevels,and
templatecreatorscanexportvirtualmachinetemplatestovCenter.
To export a virtual machine template to vCenter
1Intheleftpane,clickVMTemplates.
2MovethepointeroveratemplatenameandselectExport.
3 SelectvCenter.
4Typeadisplaynamefortheexportedtemplate.
5 Select
adatastore.
6 Selectanetwork.
7ClickOK.
