Managing Physical Networks
Toprovidevirtualmachineswithaccesstoaphysicalnetwork,youmustfirstaddthenetworkasaresource
inLabManager,andthenassigntheresourcetooneormoreorganizations.
Monitor IP Pool Usage for a Physical Network
EveryvirtualmachineusingastaticIPaddressingmodeforaNICconnectedtoaphysicalnetworkrequires
anIPaddressfromtheIPpoolofthephysicalnetwork.ThisIPaddressstayswiththevirtualmachinethrough
thevariousoperationsinLab Manager.Whenyoudeleteallinstancesofthevirtual
machinewiththisIP
address,Lab ManagerreleasestheIPaddresstotheIPpool.YoucancontrolthelengthoftimeLab Manager
reservesreleasedIPaddressesbeforereturningthemtotheIPpool.See“ConfiguringGeneralPreferences”on

Whenyoudeployaconfigurationinfencedmode(unlessyouusetheBlockInandOutoption),Lab Manager
assignsexternalIPaddressesfromthephysicalnetworkIP
pooltovirtualmachinesintheconfiguration.
You can,forexample,usetheexternalIPaddresstoaccessavirtualmachinefromoutsideafenced
configuration.Whenyouundeploythisconfiguration,Lab ManagerreleasestheexternalIPaddresses.
Forfencedconfigurations(exceptthoseusingtheBlockInandOutoption),Lab Managercreatesa
virtual
routerthatrequirestwoIPaddresses.TheaddressesforavirtualrouterreturntotheIPpoolwhenyou
undeploytheconfiguration.
To monitor an IP Pool

2OnthePhysicalNetworkstab,movethepointeroveraphysicalnetworknameandselectIPPool.
TheIPPoolpagedisplays
thenetworkname,theIPpool,andthenumberofusedandtotalIPaddresses.
ThetableincludesinformationaboutIPaddressesfromthepoolthatareinuse.TheDeallocateIncolumn
indicatestheamountoftimeremainingbeforeanunusedexternalIPaddressbecomesavailable.
