Cloning Configurations
Youcancloneyourownconfigurationorconfigurationssharedbyotherusers.Cloning
createsanewconfigurationbasedontheoriginalconfiguration.Theoriginal
configurationcontinuestoexist.
Foreachvirtualmachineintheoriginalconfiguration,Lab Managerusesthevirtual
machine’svirtualharddiskasa“basedisk”andthencreates
deltadiskstostorethe
changesyoumaketoboththeoriginalandclonedconfigurations.Thisoperation
addressesvirtualmachineproliferationbyusing“referentialprovisioning,”aprocess
thatinvolvesstoringnewchangesbutreferringbacktoachainofdeltadisks.
Whenyoucloneaconfiguration,Lab Managerassignsthesamenetwork
parametersto
theclonedvirtualmachines.Ifyoudeploytheoriginalandclonedconfigurationsatthe
sametime,duplicateIPaddresserrorsoccurunlessoneoftheconfigurationsis
deployedinfencedmode.
Inafencedconfiguration,virtualmachinesretainthesameIPaddresswithinthefence.
Eachtimeyoudeploy
afencedconfiguration,Lab ManagerassignsnewexternalIP
addressesfromtheLab ManagerIPaddresspoolforcommunicationoutsidethefence.
Lab ManagerreturnstheIPaddressestothepoolwhenthefencedconfigurationis
undeployed.
To clone a configuration
1Intheleftpane,clickWorkspace.
2MovethepointerovertheconfigurationnameandchooseClonefrom
themenu.
3Specifythedetailsoftheclone:
aEnteranamefortheclone.

OTEYoucannotdeployconfigurationsthatuseDHCPinfencedmode.Inorderto
deployaDHCPconfigurationanditscloneatthesametime,changethemachine
namesandresettheMACaddressesforallthevirtualmachinesinoneofthe
configurations.See“EditingVirtualMachineProperties”onpage 42.

OTEIfyoudeployafencedconfigurationwiththeBlockTrafficInandOutoption,
Lab ManagerdoesnotassignexternalIPaddresses.
NOTELab ManagerdoesnotreturntheIPaddressofaclonedorcopiedvirtual
machinetotheIPpooluntilthevirtualmachineandallitscopiesaredeleted.
