About Templates
Atemplateisavirtualmachineimageloadedwithanoperatingsystem,applications
anddata.Youcanthinkofatemplateasarawvirtualmachine.
Onceyou“publish”atemplate(makeitavailabletothepublic),youcanlaythe
foundationformultimachineconfigurationswithoutthetime‐consumingprocessof
reinstallingsoftwareorperformingsetuptasksagain.Theuseoftemplatesensuresthat
virtualmachinesareconsistentlyconfiguredwithoperatingsystems,versions,system
packs,andmoreacrossanentireorganization.
VMwarerecommendsinstallingLMToolsontemplates.LMToolsisafeaturewhich
allowsLabManagertoautomaticallyconfigurenetworksettings
(IPaddress,MAC
address,SecurityIdentifier,andmore)forvirtualmachines.Thesetoolssaveyouthe
troubleofmanuallyconfiguringthesettings.See“InstallingLMTools”onpage 58for
moreinformation.
